FB Glove Rule Change
« on: February 18, 2011, 08:45:12 AM »
Starting in the 2011 season, the NCAA will not require football gloves to be mostly gray.  There will be no stipulation in color.  From Ty Halpin at the NCAA.....

".... notified by the NCAA that during the recent NCAA Football Rules committee meeting they deleted the restriction on the color of gloves that can can be worn in NCAA sanctioned play.

Where, in previous seasons the color of gloves was restricted to gray, with the new ruling, gloves can be any color or combination of colors. Please note that gray is still a legal color as well. Also, this ruling does not in any way change the requirement that football gloves must meet all requirements of the NOCSAE standard for football gloves.

This ruling is effective immediately for the 2011 season."

Thank goodness.  I hated that we had to look at the gloves.  No more worrying about gloves and knees being cover by pads made it so we are no longer the fashion police before the game.

There was a reason for gray gloves.  What you will see now is linemen wearing gloves the color of the OPPONENT'S jersey, making it (supposedly) harder to see them grasping the jersey.

We never enforced it anyway.  We were told to notify the HC and include the violations on the NCAA report.

Here is where working in the UK has its benefits. The guys I officiate have to buy their own gloves so most won't be purchasing a new pair for every different opponent.

But we do not call "grasping" as a hold. Takedown, arm hold, etc for it to be a hold.

What if the "grasping" takes the defender's feet away?  Ain't that a foul?

Will the sewn in designs on the palms (players place their hands together facing a camera to make a letter) be OK as well?

Last season, a player from Oregon making the 'O' letter from his gloves got a flag while the player from Ohio State did the same and did not. Maybe it was just a problem for the 'O' schools.

Yes, but there are three parts to a foul - the grasp, encirclement, arm bar, etc., the demonstrated restriction or arrested action, and its relevance to the play. As you describe, a hold with the taking away of the feet may be a foul, if it also is near enough to the point of attack to prevent an opportunity for the fouled player to make a play on the ball-carrier or ball. The grasp of the jersey alone doesn't qualify for foul. Most coordinators will support a take-down regardless of its relevance to the play, however.

Doesn’t the National Philosophies say that a take-down regardless of its relevance and location on the field has to be called every time?

If the takedown, grasping takes a step away, and any other action that rises to the level of a foul is noticed, it will still be called regardless of the color of the gloves.  Gloves don't make the foul, the action by the players dictates a foul.
I love this game!

May be confused, but I think "taking the defender's feet away" does not always lead to a "takedown".

Yes, but it is still up to each coordinator to evaluate each call, and they each seem to have slightly varying tolerances.

Quoting myself:

Does this have to be voted upon by another committee or will it go ahead for 2011?

I think all of the proposed changes have to go before PROP before they are official changes.
