Again, somewhat speculative, but in analzying the new BBW rules, as we have them today:
B can only BBW in the blocking zone extended, until the ball leaves the blocking zone. So, after that, they can’t BBW – period. Anywhere. So, a DB can’t cut a lead blocker on a sweep or pass-run play downfield, etc. But, a Team A blocker CAN cut him. If the blocker was within the blocking zone or a lineman within 7-yards of the snapper at the snap, he can cut the DB in any direction. Even A players outside the blocking zone, in motion, or linemen more than 7 yards from the snapper can cut the DB “north-south” or toward “their sideline.” But the DB can’t BBW, period.
Other than watching a WR all the way across the field, the rule is simpler and easier to officiate, I think. But, I’m not sure how fair it is.
One thing about it – it will prevent low blocks on the QB. If he is still within the blocking zone (e.g., quick pass after taking a hand-to-hand snap) they can still cut him if he hasn’t let go of the ball, or it is just coming off his hand. But, after that, or if he's in a shotgun or drops back, the ball will be outsde the zone quickly, and they can't cut him.
That’s how I read it.
