NCAA DPI Question
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:10:21 PM »
New to NCAA rules here.....

I've been going over some practice tests that I've been given and I wanted to ask you guys about this situation:

A 3&8 at A20. Wide receiver A82 runs straight down the field at the snap. Cornerback B22 runs beside A82 and at the A26 steps in front of and makes contact with A82 while not looking back for the ball. B22 maintains this contact for twelve yards and never looks back for the ball. The catchable pass falls incomplete.

The answer key says: A 1-10 A35.  Why is this at the A35?  The foul took place at the A26.  Shouldn't this be A 1-10 A26?  Is it because the contact was maintained for 12 yards....is that why they want the 15 yard penalty as opposed to the spot foul?

Thanks guys!

Tough to answer this question without knowing WHEN the pass was thrown. If the ball was not thrown until the receiver was at the A-39 (12 +7) then it would be 15 yards from the previous spot. Again, can't say unless you know when the pass was thrown.

Pass interference restrictions don't begin for the defence until the ball is thrown, so there probably was no foul in this play at the 26 yard line.  If this had been a down and out/in or a hook and you think you've got DPI qualifying contact at a specific spot that is less than 15 yards from the LOS, absolutely a spot foul; but a fly pattern that ends with an incompletion at roughly the 38 yard line, I would go with a 15 yarder all the way.

I immagine the foul also took place at the A38.

Thanks guys.....I think what's confusing me is that they don't say when the ball was thrown.  Badly worded tests.....sounds like I'm taking a Fed test all over again.  hEaDbAnG

It's tough to write good test questions, so far I've only seen Rom Gilbert to consistently do an excellent job in providing absolutely everything you need to answer.

To reduce confusion, I suggest you adopt the NCAA shorthand for designating yardlines on the field of play.  For example, Team A's 20 yardline is designated as the "A-20", not A20.  NCAA would use A20 to represent a Team A player whose number is 20.

Keep bringing the questions.  Scrimmages are coming up.
