Is the UIL fight really about money?
« on: April 19, 2011, 09:49:03 AM »
During the past few days, popular news sites reiterated my belief in that the University of Texas has more money than they know what to do with - their endowment is 20 billion dollars which is second only to Harvard University - UT just recently purchased 1 billion dollars worth of gold bullion as part of their investment strategy.  Many who support TASO over the UIL in "the fight" suggest that UIL is only in it for the money - since UIL is part of the University of Texas - does this argument still exist?  Just kicking the ant pile during a slow news day.   eAt&

It is some about money but mostly the power trip.

UIL does not enjoy the financial status of UT and there money is mainly from the playoffs in each sport. UIL was in the hole financially until two years ago when the legislature plugged in millions for steroid testing. Some was spent for the testing and the rest went into the UIL general fund to ostensibly pay for future testing.

Parts of the UT system are looking at 10-15% budget cuts so money is still a factor although, as stated, there are likely other reasons also.  And I don't know if UIL even gets any money from the UT system

Interesting article on the UIL budget:

Being part of UT and being funded by UT are two seperate items. The UIL is not funded by UT other than being given office space to operate.

That being said, if/when the Manor Road Crowd ever needs legal funding in its ongoing battle with TASO or actually with whomever, then it will either have to cajole whatever entities there are over at the State AG's office to represent it, or it will have to convince the "powers that be" over at the Forty Acres to dole out some of that massive revenue outlay of theirs to offer representation for their sorry hides. In any event, that would seem much easier said than done!   z^
