Illegal Blocks
« on: May 25, 2011, 02:12:34 PM »
This is the first off-season study video.  The illegal blocking rule has been changed this year.  You can be sure this will be a very hot topic in study groups and at our clinic in July.  These are several clips of blocks that are obviously illegal or that need to be discussed.  We MUST all be on the same page with what is legal and are consistent throughout the season.  If we can report on what our key did on each play, we should not miss this:

This is a big file and it may take a few minutes to access.

Good Clips! Some comments and food for thought.

On clip #3 "Illegal Block by Slot Receiver" - any thoughts on potential for targeting the receiver who missed the ball? The tackler initiated the contact after the ball had bounced off the ground and the receiver was "defenseless". Thoughts?

On clip# 5 " Missed IBW by Motion Back" - It appears that the motion back in question missed his initial block and was spinning and not intentionally blocking below the waist. Does that come into the thought process of foul v no-call? Thoughts?

Last Clip "Is Block by Receiver  at the Bottom Legal" - Contact occurs at the line of scrimmage legally and continues. The defender is contacting the blocker with his hands prior to and during the blocker going low therefore, legal block. Stay with your keys and see the entire play.

These are good examples of why we need to stay with our keys a little longer. On two run plays both H/L had flags on their keys during the run. The last clip was a good example of cleaning up behind the play!!!
