Lightweight Black pants
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:30:03 PM »
Has anyone put their hands on any of the new versions of the lightweight pants?  Honigs/cliff keen/ etc?   If so could you share with us what you thought about them, pros and cons, comparisons, which is your preference....   Thanks!

I just got my pair from Honigs.  I have not looked at them much, but they are definitely light weight.  After I try them on and get them fitted I will give more input.

My Cliff Keen "all weather" are very light weight and feel almost like the material for knickers. I have not put them on yet.

Shipping Update:
Just talked to Honigs (Raleigh location) and he told me they just received a small shipment of pants... 30 in each size and have begun filling the existing orders in date order.  The shirts are due in next week with the rest of the cool pants in the next couple weeks.  They feel sure the latest we should be receiving everything by the first week in August.

Got mine from Honig's and they are great  They fit better than the heavier ones and you hardly feel that you even have pants on!  Scary thought!!!!!!!

Don't like the Honigs lightweight.  They appear to be just long coaches shorts.  IMO Gerry Davis All weather are better for me personally.  Honigs also the exclusive supplier of black pants with a small FHSAA patch on the right front pocket.  These pants will be mandatory for State finals.  Our association wearing black for all games beginning this school year.  College guys who have done scrimmages in the heat report the lightweight black pants are no hotter than knickers.  I believe most of the other larger assns in the state also going to black.

a long version of coaches shorts?????   :(
Last time I saw coaches shorts or coaches "pants" outside of a football official, I think Chuck Noll was wearing a pair, circa mid-80's.

Our assn tries to get us to wear black coaches shorts for scrimmages, PW, etc.  Most, however, wear mesh type Nikes, Russell, etc.  Lots cooler and a little more modern.  The Honigs are just like coaches shorts and same material as knickers.  Too much stretch to them.  GD are a little more professional looking.

Tried on a bought a pair of Smitty's lightweight version today. Just a little heavier than a poly Reebok type sweat pants. They feel great and are very light. They've put in a seam down the front to keep them looking sharp -- for pants, a good thing, but for knickers which some added, it looked stupid.

Honestly, as soon as the majority of football officials wear these pants, knickers will be a thing of the past. Can't be too soon for me. Why go through multiple pairs of white socks when a black pair will last you years even when they fade? The pants will be easier to keep clean (or at least, clean looking) and they won't fade -- I have microfiber poly shorts I've had for most of a decade that are still the same color they were when purchased and they've been washed on hot hundreds of times. I would still, however, wash these pants on cold -- warm wash/cold rinse at the hottest.

Our assn tries to get us to wear black coaches shorts

We switched to black shorts last year.  The Honig's look and feel cheap but, lets face it, its hard to do much with 100% polyester.   Teamwork USA, which makes for several of the off brand officials websites aren't much better and come pretty snug.   Softball players don't even wear those style shorts anymore so there isn't a big market for that style beyond us.

The biggest downside to shorts is the inseam style changes too much over the years.  When we were still wearing white, you'd see some guys "showing a lot of thigh" and others with shorts cutting off at the top of the knee.  To compound our errors, our association demanded long OTC socks instead of crew or footies.

Some of us tried sneaking into scrimmages with the more modern looking workout shorts-"hey if they're good enough for the NFL guys"...........but we got told they better not be seen this August.

As for pants, our decision was made this summer- knickers are gone.  I guess I'll hang on to a pair for the odd crew chief who calls for them to be worn in a youth game set.  I've even got one pair of Cliff Keen's I bought on a close out still in the plastic.  Hello eBay.

Just got ours in from The Referees Call.  Nice pair of pants.  We'll see how cool they are in 3 weeks.  We have had some bad heat here in the Mid-South the last few weeks.

I live in Southern Mississippi, and we wear the Black shorts for Varsity games till Oct 1.

In WV we are have the option of wearing the black pants in the regular season, they are mandatory for the playoffs.  They will be mandatory in all varsity games in 2013.  My crew has decided to wear the black pants in every varsity level game this season.  Why not, we have to wear them in playoffs anyway.  It doesnt matter whether we wear short sleeves or long sleeves, we can wear the black pants.  As for wearing short in a Varsity contest.  Why would you want to.  I dont care how hot it is outside, it looks very unprofessional.

I'd suggest that it'd look more unprofessional to have officials who were obviously overheating and struggling to keep up.

Thats why you get in shape and prepare for the season.  If you arent in shape and cant last a game, then you need to quit officiating.   How many NFL or college games do you see on tv that are played in the heat, where the the officials are wearing shorts?  You dont and you know why? Because it looks unprofessional.  leave the shorts for the Pee Wee games.  I dont even wear shorts for JV and middle school school games.

We have been told the ONLY time you are allowed to wear shorts is if you are working a Spring scrimmage. Any unpaid, benefit, or inter-squad scrimmages worked during the Fall the crew MUST wear full uniform. No exceptions.

Shorts are expected here for all sub-varsity games until it gets cold. Black shorts only, black ankle socks only.

Mota-

What brand of black pants do you wear. I have worn mine for a couple games now and would NEVER go back to knickers. The first night we wore them it was a 5:30 start and the temp was 97 degrees. We had one guy on our crew who was waiting for his warm weather pants arrive so he wore his Honigs foul weather pants...he said they were cooler than wearing knickers...

I have the lightweight from umpattire.com. They are great! They also have a seam that runs down the center of each leg that look more professional and neat. They are Smitty's brand.
