Officials opinion on a coach
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:34:18 AM »
So here is the deal and I wanted to get the opinion from other official's point of view.  I am partially biased because this guy is my fiancee's ex-husband.  I'll try to leave personal opinion out of it so you get the jest of the story.

Do you feel a person with a domestic violence conviction should be coaching high school kids?  He has volunteer coached for one season and started this past season volunteering for another school.  That school later put two and two together and told him it would be in his best interest to look other places to coach.  Now he just started volunteer coaching at a private school in town.

Now I personally know he has a short fuse, but as far as I know he has never acted out against his own children.

Just from an official's point of view (or from the point of view of a person who loves the game), should those people who have a domestic violence conviction be allowed to coach?

He wouldn't be coaching at any public school in Florida due to the Lunsford Act.   Probably not any private schools either.

I guess I kind of forgot one small thing.  It doesn't appear the schools around here really check up on volunteer coaches.  It's a decision by the head coach I think and since they aren't being paid, the school just lets the head coach do what he needs to do.  I could be wrong, but that is how it seems.

The only reason it was discovered who he was by the school who suggested he look elsewhere was because the head coach's wife had personal knowledge and put two and two together.  This is the same school district who sent him a letter from their attorney telling him not to come back on the property of the elementary school or he would be arrested, after he yelled at and threatened the principal and another teacher.  But since there was no check done, it took a while to put two and two together.

Doesn't matter here if you're a volunteer or not. You have to have the background check.  School boards can be MORE restrictive, but not less.  Private schools are not covered under the law, but they'd be idiots not to require the check nowadays.

You're asking if hot-headed people with short fuses should be allowed to coach?     :!#

No, especially those who are hot-headed with short fuses.

My experience w/ FL is:
some counties- No cannot coach/officiate,
while others - Yes.
Interesting scenario though.

#1- Fiancee's ex husband = stay the #&!! out of it.
#2- If he passes whatever standards his school has, lax though they may be, who are "we" to render judgment.
