How often

How often do NFL officials come from the college game and how many skip that step? I dont have any idea, I just remember reading an interview with Hochuli talking about how he got into the NFL after working local pee-wee and HS games. Is it more common for NFL guys to go step-by-step or what? I see a lot of pretty young NFL officials so I'd be surprised if they put in 10-15 yrs in HS then another 5-10 in college and finally to the NFL.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think you will see any NFL officials who don't have some college experience.  They may not have many years of college experience, but they will have some.

I'm pretty sure Hochuli worked in the PAC 10 or the WAC.  He didn't go straight from High School to the NFL.

I know Wikipedia isn't necessarily always true, but according to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hochuli), he worked in the Pac-10 before going to the NFL.

Heck, I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember hearing that in order to work NCAA DI most supervisors want at least 5 years of DII or DIII.

That is the general rule.  There are exceptions, but they seem to be few and far between.
