That's why we make them optional. In baseball, the default is navy but if all umpires want to wear black, they can. Besides, most chapters have no or few officials working varsity their first year, and those that have first years working varsity probably would go with the default uniform.
Look, I realize the shirt talk is sexy and I do agree that the wide stripes look better with the black pants, but one thing at a time: let's rid ourselves of the knickers and in a year or two go with the optional 2" stripes. Keep in mind that through last year, you had to wear long sleeve shirts with the pants, and pants were only approved 2 years ago. Meaning, things can change pretty fast and if baseball is any example, we move toward what higher levels do fairly quickly.
Does anyone recall crews wearing black pants before they were approved? Did TASO say anything then?
