Clear, I felt almost as strongly as you last season, but after having worn them for all of my games this year, I won't go back to knickers.  The pants are much more comfortable and I think they look fine.

The new pants make me look 20 lbs. lighter. Oh, wait..I AM 20 lbs. lighter (yea for me). OK, they make me look more than 20 lbs lighter.  ;D

Another reason for me to hate them...I dont need to look like Im 150 lbs.

TexDoc, I'm not debating their comfort or anything like that. Heck, it was mentioned on this(or was it another) thread that we could just go out in crocs and a T-Shirt as long as we called a game, so why bother with looking professional, right? Same argument applies here. It looks like crap, IMHO, so why would we do it? Either way, respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree.

Not sure I have ever heard anyone say the bag was to "inconspicuously" mark a spot.  Seems to me the purpose would be to "clearly" mark a spot.  The spots we are marking are important spots for various reasons.  No need to be inconspicuous.  If you want that, why not make them "turf green"?

I'm going off the mechanics manual that stresses not to throw bean bags, just to drop them where the spot is. Seems to me TASO wants us to use them for ourselves, not for the fans, coaches, TV, etc.

A few seasons ago, before black pants were seriously being discussed, I was adamently opposed to going away from knickers.  Now that the pants are here, I can't get away from them fast enough.  As much as I hate to say it, they simply look antiquated.  After wearing them last Friday, and having them and the socks dig into my calves, I can't wait to go away from them for good.

I'm in agreement, Brad! I happened to be one of those stalwarts who ardently defended the knickers, but getting around to wearing the black pants was truly believing! The only other thing that I could offer is that if we are going to go with the black pants, then the wide-striped shirt should be made as mandatory apparel as well! With the black pants, they just naturally look better!   z^

I respect your opinion and thank you for your approach.  That's why we have this forum (Thanks Grant!) so we can give our opinions and learn some rules and mechanics.

Regardless of the fact that no one but you could hear it on kick-offs :)

I can't deny that!  It makes those kickers watch me though.

I honestly can't see the attraction to those other than the fact that they're the new thing.

This tells me you haven't worn them. For virtually everyone that has, we can't go to them full time fast enough.

Do basketball officials' pants look like warm-ups? I realize they don't have the stripes, but from a distance, its hard to tell a difference between the two other than the white stripe. The pants seem to be the right mix of sporty-ness (if you will) rather than a pair of slacks, which on a football field wouldn't look right.

The "drop, not throw" is to ensure accuracy of spot not to make the deployment of the bag any less obvious.  Having been in a game where I bagged (with a WHITE bag) an illegal touch spot on a controversial  onside kick I can say I was ecstatic the bag was visible on the video.

Im not a basketball fan, but dont NBA officials wear dress pants kind of like baseball umpires?

I dont get this 'theyre 1000x mpre comfortable' argument either. I play baseball with kickers-style pants with long socks and i move around just fine. Im a CF and led my league in SB last yr. Seems to me theyre comfortable enough to perform in.

Dude, have you WORN them? If not, then maybe actually wearing them, you will "get it."

NBA officials wear (probably exclusively) Sansabelt brand pants. I think Honigs supplies MLB and most conference baseball umpires, though a few will wear one of about 3 or 4 other brands. The baseball pants are belted while the basketball pants aren't.

I can unequivically say that in wearing the black football pants, I absolutely do not miss those elastic constriction bands on the legs of the knickers. The black pants are far more comfortable than I had ever thought they would be!   z^

After watching the Texas HS championships and a bunch of bowl games, Texas needs to SERIOUSLY consider adopting the wide stripped shirts for next year. Look better in general and more of an authority figure look as well.

Joe -You hitting the bubbly a bit early? ? ?

How in the world does wider stripes equate to "more of an authority figure" ??? And even if there is some way to demonstrate that, is that soething we even need to be concerned with?  You think the coaches are going to be more acceptable of our flags if we are wearing wide stripes? ? ?   I wear them on Saturdays and get the same level of respect I  get on Friday with narrow stripes.  Everytime we incorporate new gear (socks and pants being the most recent changes) it costs bug bucks. Plus it makes it harder to pass on used stuff to new members since what was used before is no longer used.

I just think they look more authoritative. Jerry Markbriet thought so too -- he mentioned it in one of his books. Coaches are but one of those making opinions on our calls.

As far as gear changes, I usually buy 1-2 new shirts (at minimum) every year as well as other gear. All that would really be required would be one (~$28), then perhaps a long sleeve for those working varsity. Because of work and a minor injury, I worked the fewest number of games this year as I ever have. I still made plenty to replace a small amount of gear. Except for 2 shirts that I only wore for varsity games for about two years (~20 games apiece), I wear out the rest of my stuff making giving it away insulting. It still looks fine, but the zippers are worn, there's a small stain on it, etc.

Cost will always be a factor and an excuse to not change.

Probably a little late in the thread to bring it up but the crew at the Wimberly - Devine playoff game had blaze orange beanbags.  I use white because that is what I am supposed to wear but I love the blaze orange.

About the only ones I have seen use them is Conference USA, heck find out when and where they have their spring meeting and set up a booth in the lobby.
