Coin Toss
« on: September 26, 2011, 11:44:14 PM »
There was a recent post regarding the coin toss and teams trying to bring props out for the toss.  I don't recall if it was on this forum or another.  If somebody can point me to it, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I try to read everything that is posted here and I don't recall seening a post about props at the coin toss (except for various coins for the R to use).
Must have been your other forum.

I don't recall a post, but seems to me if you can't have props (or draw attn to your self and the rest of the BS) for the game, you wouldn't for the toss either.

What kind of props?  I can't even imagine what they would use as a "prop".

maybe a school flag or . (?)
a school round these parts has a shovel (i believe) they tote around.  Carry it when they run thru cheerleaders @beginning of game & leave it on sidelines the rest of the game.
maybe someone brought something like that with them?????

I remember some discussion but it may have been on the old NF board.

I think I commented that in our area, one of our schools lost a player during summer workouts to a tragic accident involving his head being run over by the school's Gator after he fell.  The captains were bringing his jersey out to mid-field with them for the coin toss.  I've not had them this season and not sure if they are still doing it but I'm certain none of our officials have flagged it.  I've heard nothing from on high about stopping it.

The post was about a team wanting to bring a shovel or an axe (or some other symbol) out during the toss.  It wasn't about a jersey.

Oh yeah, now I remember where I read a thread.  It was here:

Perhaps one of the most consistent things you can anticipate from teenagers, is a never ending creativity in trying to "push the envelope".  Sadly some adults never grow out of this despite aging, and even encourage actual teenagers to push that envelope even harder.

Of course there's "nothing in the rules to prohibit this" as the rule makers assume (sometimes incorrectly) that rational adults, responsible for supervising teenagers will behave in a responsible and rational manner and will correct teenagers who try and apply teenage logic where it doesn't belong.  As a hedge against silly, irrational behavior, the rule makers added NF: 1-1-6: "The Referee has authority to rule promptly, and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules.  The referee's decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game."

That rule gives a tremendous amount of authority to the referee, whose personal judgment about such matters is the only judgment that matters.  It appears the rule makers have sufficient confidence in the judgment of those impartial arbiters assigned to implement the rules of the game to assign such power EXCLUSIVELY.  The only remaining question is whether the assigned referees have the wisdom and courage to follow their instincts, and insist that what they believe appropriate is adhered to.

I have seen quite a few teams carry a big rope or chain out for pregame and could see them wanting to carry it to the coin toss. It is supposed to show unity.

Bunch of crap if you ask me.

I'd tell them to drop the rope and just hold hands. >:D

We had the chain thing, and I didn't allow it.  I have never had a fight break out a coin toss, but if I did, I didn't want someone to have a chain or an axe to be used.

That said, I had the pleasure of doing Millsaps-Mississippi College in Veterans Stadium in Jackson, MS.  The presidents brought out a sword for the Gents and a a Choctaw hatchet for Miss College.  I trusted the president's wouldn't start a fight, though I had my doubts about the lady President from Millsaps.  She was fired up more than the players.

Had a rivalry game a couple years ago with the "trophy" being a sword.  The team currently holding the sword had one of the captains carrying the sword for the mock toss right before kickoff.  I surprised me but we didn't do anything about it at the time.

That player was ejected for fighting halfway through the first quarter.
