« on: October 04, 2011, 11:50:51 AM »
Situation: Wing official goes downfield on a punt. While heading downfield he runs into a coach who is in the restricted area?

Question: What is the call?

Reference?

And remember, it's actually a Personal Foul, not Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

Yes. The signal Personal foul, sideline interference.

Sorry.  Didn't realize this was "General Discussion".  I was using NFHS.

Sorry.  Didn't realize this was "General Discussion".  I was using NFHS.
NFHS:  9-4-8...Personal Foul (S38), Sideline Interference (S29); 15 yards from succeeding spot.  Second offense is same plus disqualification of head coach.

NCAA:  9-2-3...Dead Ball (S7), Unsportsmanlike Conduct (S27); 15 yards from succeeding spot and automatic first down for fouls by team B.

do you guys do automatic 15 for any contact?  any differentiation between brushing into the coach and full-on colliding with him?

had a HS varsity game tonight in Mass (ncaa rules); before game we politely reminded my sideline that while the ball is live nobody can be in the restricted area.  my sideline is notorious for having 7 assistant coaches standing right on the sidelines during play.  HC says to me: "But you're supposed to be on the field, right? You stay on the field and we can stay right here [points to restricted area]."

The other thing they try to get away with is being on the field, but 10 yards in the offensive backfield. As if anyone would ever go THAT direction, right?

I hope he was smiling when he said that.  I don't think anybody has trouble with a coach who gets caught up in the excitement of the game and wanders where he shouldn't be, if when corrected he acknowledges and steps back where he belongs.

On the other hand, a coach who seriously suggests the other side of the line belongs to him, might need a thorough explanation of the rule followed by vigorous and precise enforcement, for him and ALL his assistants.

This actually occurred with me last night. The coach barely hit shoulders with me. I know it was completely incidental and he just got excited for a receiver that broke a tackle. So after the play me and him had a nice little talk, but he knew he was wrong and apologized.
