touchback signal
« on: October 10, 2011, 02:40:26 PM »
What is the approved signal for giving a touchback? It is to be the same as the dead ball signal and waving it over your head like a fair catch vs. starting from the shoulders and waving it on your side.......... thanks........

NCAA rules officials should be using the "fair catch" style signal, NOT the NFL-style signal which is one hand out to the  side with arm going up and down.

You know TXMike, that's what I've been saying but not getting cooperation. Page 135  of the CCA manual on the bottom right has the dead ball signal, touchback side to side but some interpret that as the side of their body. Are you aware of any other type of reference and thanks for the reply?

Just tell 'em when they get to the NFL, they can use the 'one armed flap;' 'til then, the correct NCAA signal is a 'one armed time out signal.'

What's the difference in using that inccorrect signal and using the illegal shift signal for incomplete/no good that is so in vogue?

The difference is that the "one armed flap" is the correct signal for the NFL. The 'illegal shift incomplete pass signal' is crap for any brand of football. Jerry Seeman made that "in vogue," and when you're boss does it, it may be perceived that you should, too. But, a good signal has both arms crossing to the elbows, then back out extended - one time - and parallel to the ground.

Damn makers of shell helmets.  They're crap for any brand of football.  A good helmet is made of leather.

I don't know anyone under the age of 70 that gives that signal. The signal you describes looks sloppy.  That's why it went out of vogue.

Why do you say that looks sloppy?  That's the correct signal.  If it's not, change the rule book.

When you give it, make sure you're bent over at the waist and near the ground to really sell it!  ;)

A better mousetrap will never be found, no matter how old the classic spring trap gets. But some people still gotta look. It's an ego thing, I guess.

I tend to give S10, incomplete pass, at least twice, no matter how obvious the call is.

1: If I ever give just one wave, it doesn't feel right. It feels like I'm giving a lazy lackadaisical signal.
2: Even if the incompletion is obvious, maybe the contact wasn't. Waving twice sells a PI no-call better. I fear waving once suggests hesitancy.
3: Other waving signals are repeated as well - timeout, touchback, winding - even when obvious.

Am I way off base here? Is a second S10 wave really frowned upon in higher circles? If so, I guess I can cut it out.

You can't be serious.  Are you going to make me post clips?

Crossing you elbows in front of you body is unnatural and make it appear that you can't contol you own arms (or your excitement over the incompletion).  A controlled signal, that doesn't try to take your shoulders out of joint, is always going to look more professional.

incomplete pass signal?  I think we should give the completed catch signal immediately followed by the thumbs down signal!   ;D

Mike,
When i do actually see the correct fair catch signal used,  I sometimes see two officials using two different hands to do it, right beside each other.  Should their be a uniformity, for instance...using the arm closest to the end zone, or just the right arm, or anything?

Use the arm that your finger whistle isnt on.  That way your timeout and touchback signals are identical.   LOL
