Bat of fumble behind the line
« on: November 01, 2011, 02:59:32 PM »
Big scramble for a grounded fumble behind the line.  B2 bats the ball at the A 15 yd line and it goes into A's end zone and where B3 recovers the ball but is ruled out of bounds before gaining possession.  Think Troy Polalamu in this weekends Pittsburgh game.  I don't know the NFL rule and not asking about that (it was ruled a safety).  What if this same play occurred in one of our NFHS games on Friday night.  Very interesting situation when you see it live in full speed.  Muff or bat; Flag or no flag; New force or not; Safety or Touchback?

Grounded fumble so certainly new force by B.
If I'm reading correctly, B added force into A's EZ when it goes OOB.
Touchback, 1/10 for A.

He batted it forward, it should be a foul for illegal batting.

A grounded loose ball may not be batted in any direction except K may bat a grounded scrimmage kick back toward its own goal line.

To review the play again:

A's ball 3rd & 7 on their own 23 yd line.  A1 fumbles ball behind LOS.  Scramble for the grounded loose ball - At the A 15 yd line, B2 bats the ball out from under two A players that are trying to dive on it.  The ball goes into and out of A's end zone.  What options are given to which team (or teams) according to NFHS rules?

As a side note -- It was ruled a safety in the NFL game on Sunday.
Atlanta Blue -- do you know the NFL rule on this situation?

If it's ruled B2 illegally batted the ball, the flag is dropped at the A 15. The result of the play is a touchback.

A can accept the result of the play and take the ball at the 20.

A can accept the penalty, 15 yards from the previous spot, 1st and 10 from the A 38.

If it's ruled that B2 was just trying to pick the ball up and accidently knocked the ball into the end zone, it's a touchback.

Had they ruled it as Batting, NE would have accepted the foul, the penalty for which is 10 yards from the previous spot, and an automatic first down, making it 1 and 10 at the 33.

The bat or a new force are NOT reviewable plays in the NFL.  The only thing that could have been reviewed in this case was the recovery in or out of the end zone.
