Do they wear these all year long and it is just now coming to light, or is this just a playoff thing?

So as a younger official, what would I do if confronted with this scenario? White hat or whomever says
"we're wearing name placards." I ask, "So this game is televised?" He replies, "No, we're just wearing em to look good." What would you do? Do you call him out on it and risk the negative consequences if he's "cushy" with the brass?

Same crew as what?

Same crew in both games, I assume.

He replies, "No, we're just wearing em to look good."

No doubt that is exactly what someone like that is thinking. Brings to mind Fernando's Hideaway:

My dahling, it ees better to look good than to feel good; or, in this case, to be good.

(With apologies to Billy Crystal.)

Wearing position plackets doesn't make you look good. Being in reasonable physical condition makes you look good.
Looking good doesn't make you good, but it goes a long way to making you credible.

agreed, and as we hashed this out earlier in the year, my feeling is that wearing 1" Stripes and a placard, TV or not shouldn't be an issue as long as the whole crew has the appropriate placard.

HOWEVER.... currently it is not approved uniform, so it is an issue...

What is the big deal about TV and what does that have to do with anything as far as uniform goes? Is it only live broadcasts?  what about games that are broadcast on schools TV channels during the week but are on tape delay?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it was my understanding that the use of plackets are acceptable provided that the game is video-streamed over the internet and/or is scheduled to be shown on cable on a tape-delayed basis. If this met that particular criteria, then they would be good. Otherwise... hmmm!    z^

nothing about tape delay, actually it is specific about being live...

Quote
When officials are working a game that will be televised live in its entirety, the crew may opt
to wear letters or plackets. The plackets must be worn by the entire crew and must be
professionally attached to the shirt. The letters shall align with the TASO mechanics
manual, i.e. R, U, H, L, and B.

What is the big deal about TV and what does that have to do with anything as far as uniform goes? Is it only live broadcasts?  what about games that are broadcast on schools TV channels during the week but are on tape delay?

What is the big deal that is motivating some to even want to wear them.  That is what I don't understand.  Why would you want to incur yet another expense?  Do you who want to wear them think they make you look "better"?  Do you think they make you look slimmer?  Are they more comfortable?  I just don't get the attraction to them.  That being said, if the TASO bosses decide they can be worn, then I am not going to argue against them but I am also not going to start wearing it unless it becomes mandatory.  i just don't see the reason for wanting to wear them.  Maybe some of who do want to wear them or know some of these guys who have worn them, can provide a reason.

As for what is live televised....I don't want to sound Clintonesque , but all depends on definitions.  And the way things are in this techniological age, I can see some folks arguing that live streaming equates to live televised.  If that is so, I wonder if UIL prohibits live streaming of Friday night games like they do for live televised games?

I worked a hoops game in 1990 or 1991 that was televised live...on a local cable channel.

Make sure you know this isn't a fact before you offer up criticism.

I'm not that concerned about placards. I agree -- I don't see a reason to wear them, but as long as the shirt complies with the uniform, is this really a big deal? Sort of like the short sleeve/black pants deal in years past when the official statement was long sleeve only.

I doubt most of us are 100% sound on all the mechanics in the manual. True, intentionally disregarding the manual is pretty cheezy, but I have to think that some of these issues involve honest mistakes -- they saw "TV", heard it was on some sort of video, and said "hey, let's wear the placard shirts."

I think the attraction is "look at us, we are a college crew; therefore, we must be good".  Nothing else makes sense.

I was fortunate enough to have worked the Steele v Madison ESPN game, nationally televised. We as a crew were not planning on wearing placards, but several people within our chapter and outside our chapter asked if we were. The reasons who knows ? We did incur the expense and wore the placards. When we work live local televised games we wear them. It does not change our approach to any game just that we have them already. I would caution those that do make the investment and follow the TASO guidelines, because you now have one less shirt to wear except for televised games. I can assure you that there is not an ego issue with regards to wearing them.
We are humbled by opportunities and grateful for the chances we have been given.

What was the motivation for making the effort and expending the resources to get the shirts?    Not saying it was wrong to do so (although our crew has never seen the need to do that for our televised games) just wondering what it was that drove the decision.

One word describes this whole topic...ego.  I'm not saying that is a bad thing, it takes a certain amount of moly to do what we do. I want to take the field with confident men who are proud of what they do.  We've all seen those who think a little more of themselves than they probably should, and that's where the problem lies.  We are supposed to be stewards of the game through application of the rules which provide for safety and fairness.  Our association has adopted rules for us to follow as well--for fairness and professionalism.  If we can't follow the uniform code, what are our real objectives?  I am always amazed (and disappointed) at how selfish, egotistic, and competetive some people can be in this business.  Just a couple of bad apples can cause a lot of problems for the bunch.  Why be that guy?  I just don't get it.
