Hello brothers, haven't posted for a while but I do check in periodically and read some of your posts. Had a crappy season this year. Joined a new crew. Had a chance to work local schools and took the opportunity. An unfortunate circumstance to one key crew member and an injury to another left us with a subpar crew and it showed on the field. Needless to say, the crew was told it would not be back together next year.

That being said, for the first time since year one, I am not on a crew. I'm looking to sharpen my skills as much as possible for next year. I already work semi-pro during the summer which helps a lot. I also read the rulebook, casebook and study video throughout the year. I'm looking for a good camp to attend this spring or summer where I can learn and get evaluated. I don't want anyone to say that I didn't work hard enough to achieve my goal to work post-season. I don't do any college ball, just high school. I live in the Kansas City area. Does anyone a suggestion of one to attend. Thanks for reading this.

I don't know of any near KC.
There's a Tom Beard clinic in DC. Held in conjunction with I believe Hampton University Spring practice
A good one in S. CA, in conjunction with the USC spring practices - but cannot remember its name.
TX generally has several.

The TBFOC is normally held with the Howard spring scrimmages Hampton is 4 hrs away.

Update: the CA camp I was thinking of is the Personal Touch camp & it's @UCLA (not USC as I thought)
I also hear of a few others out west that are considered "A+".
A Fresno, CA camp
A Reno, NV camp (both, I think, are geared for guys wanting to move from HS to NCAA)

Have you thought about attending the MIAA camp? Last year it was held at MWSU and Pitt State. The year before it was at NWMSU and Pitt State. $200 for Friday night and Saturday. This last year we went down and worked the scrimmage at Benedictine. They have staff from MIAA, Heart, Jayhawk, Big 12 and the NFL.

That is an idea. I know a lot of guys around here that work MIAA. I'm not looking to work college ball but if somebody would observe me and help my mechanics, I might try it. Thanks.

Clarification

Personal Touch does not exist anymore

Reno Camp is designed for officials working their way to Div 1. Seven man mechanics

Fresno Camp is designed for high school officials working 5 man mechanics.

Both are excellent learning opportunities.

This is a camp geared toward making officials better for college, however there are several high school officials who attend every year. I'm not sure if they all have plans on moving to college or if they are attending to be a better hs official. Most all of the mechanics are geared toward college, but I have picked up quite a few tips and techniques that help me to be a better hs official.

I've never been down, but I have always heard that MSHSAA puts on a good mechanics clinic. I hope I'm able to go down this year. I think it's always the last weekend in July.

You can contact Phil Laurie who is the head of officials for the MIAA. His email address is plaurie (at) cox (dot) net. I broke his email up to save from spammers. They usually don't have everything nailed down until after the first of the year so it might be a couple of weeks before he has specific details.

The MSHSAA camp in Columbia, MO, is pretty good. I went a few years back. It was decent then, but I've heard it's gotten better as years have passed.

I've heard really good things about the MIAA camp. I haven't attended this for a variety of reasons, but I believe it is more geared for current NCAA officials or officials looking to get into the college ranks.

We are lucky to have camps available these days. When I started 35 years ago, there were no camps to attend.
The Blue Ridge Football Officials Clinic is being held on March 10, 2012 in Chattanooga, TN. This will be the 3rd year for the clinic and it has been moved to reach a different group of officials. The clinic will continue to move around the southeast and mid atlantic. This year there will be a whole new group of presenters from the ACC, SEC, Southern, and NFL. The clinic is signing contracts with a hotel for a group discount and the website will be updated in a week or two. Last years site is up and can be reviewed. www.brfoc.com. It is a one day clinic on Sat and will cost around $100. Fee will be set soon as contracts are set for facility and food. The clinic has sold out each of the first two years.

I attended the BRFOC last year. If you are a college official, or particularly, an aspiring college official, I would recommend it.

As for NFHS, I really didn't glean that much. There was very little for the NF official and what they had was 7 man mechanic, which is what Va. has apparently gone to.
I did have a good time in Roanoke though, lots to do and see.

I did take away some good info from the fitness segment and incorporated a a lot of it into my pre-season routine.

I registered for the GLCFOC it is in April in Lansing Mi. Will be getting my plane ticket this week. Ready to leave this week. Never been to the clinic so looking forward to it.
