CFO Helmet Video
« on: February 29, 2012, 11:57:22 AM »
Took a look at the helmet video from RR. I had assumed that the helmet rule would only apply if the ball was alive. But, clearly, if the helmet comes off during action related to the play, even momentarily after the ball has become dead, the rule applies. He sits out the next play.

And if inside of a minute to play there could be a 10-second runoff.  I posed the following to my crew.  Team A is driving down by 4 points and in the redzone.  After the play (one in which a helmet comes off a team A player) there are 8 seconds remaining and team A will be spikng the ball in hopes of getting that one last shot to win.  But now we have to run 10 seconds off and allow the game to end (assuming no foul by B caused the loss of the helmet).  This rule appears to be cut and dried.  We can't use judgment on this and allow team A another play.  Gonna need a police escort getting out of there.  Am I missing something???  I know Mr. Redding mentions that people will always come up with scenarios when rule changes occur and the situations some officials bring up are sometimes far-fetched.  I'm not so sure what I proposed is.

The player wearing his helmet loose will also need the police escort.  I personally like this rule change and expect we won't see many helmets popping off this year.  Similar to last year's live ball UNS.  Some rule changes effectively remove an element of the game that doesn't need to exist if the penalty is severe enough.

If you would allow them a play then a player could just remove his helmet if they were running out of time and felt they couldn't get the spike executed legally.
