Question of the day
« on: March 08, 2012, 12:52:04 PM »
WAKE UP!

Here's an easy one just to see if anyone is still alive out there.

3/10, A-2, 0:15 2nd period. From nine yards deep in the end zone, A11 throws a pass toward A22, who catches it two yards deep in the end zone and advances to the goal line, where he fumbles. A78 recovers the loose ball at the A-3, where he is 'down' with 0:09 on the game clock. During the loose ball from the fumble, A68 clipped B38 at the A-5.
Ruling (show your work, and include game and play clock status):

Paraphrasing Dr. Rumack, "Good luck. We're all counting on you."

Is the covering official's beanbag in the EZ or in the field of play?  ::)

i don't think bean bag matters.  end of run (fumble) is behind NZ, so basic spot is previous spot.  go half distance from previous spot...A, 3rd and 11 from A-1.  clock will wind on ready, play clock at 25.  of course B will want to decline penalty, and have 4th and 9 from A-3...same clock status.

NO MORE CALLS! We have a winner.
Yeah, declining would seem to be the smart call, but I've seen stranger things.

Yeah, like throwing a screen pass in your own end zone on 3rd and long!

Not sure of the down and distance, but I have seen passes from deep in an end zone to another player in the end zone. It happens. But we aren't here to question the wisdom or intelligence of coaches or players. Just studying possibilities, and how we are to apply the appropriate rules.

A11

I thought we had another one of those "special" all eligible plays when I glanced at this.   :!#

Doesn't B also have the option of accepting the 10 second rundown and the half would be over?

No...for that clause to kick in...the foul has to stop the clock (ie false start, DB illegal substitution, etc.)

The foul stopped the clock. If Team B is ahead they may elect the 10 sec runoff and game is over.  Enforce from the previous spot.

I thought that ZAP-10 only applies for fouls that immediately stop the clock, not all live ball fouls?

The foul didn't stop the clock "During the loose ball from the fumble, A68 clipped B38 at the A-5.". The clock was stopped after the play to enforce the penalty (two different things). No ZAP-10.

All dead-ball fouls stop the clock, if it is running, but only certain live-ball fouls cause the clock to stop - those that cause the clock to stop the moment they happen. The foul in this example was a live ball foul that did not cause the clock to stop at the moment it happened. So, no possibility of a 10-second subtraction.
