Correct statement or not
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:56:32 AM »
I am making a reference book and am wondering if the following are correct statements or not.

This is for a pass play foul.

 Personal foul by the defense prior to completion enforce from previous spot. If the offense loses possession after completion, and A accepts penalty tack on from end of run.

And

 Personal foul by the offense prior to interception = If B declines penalty it's B's ball.

For NCAA, incorrect. A pass 'play' is from the snap until the pass is caught, intercepted, or incomplete. The penalty for a personal foul by B during a pass play can only be enforced at the previous spot, plus an automatic first down. A would simply decline the penalty if the play gains more yards and yields a first down. However, A might accept the penalty at the previous spot in lieu of the result of the play, if the result of the play doesn't yield a first down. The exceptions to this are: roughing the passer, which can be added to the end of the last A run, if there is no change of team possession during the down; and when A scores a TD, in which case the penalty can 'carry over' to the try or succeeding KO.

And

 Personal foul by the offense prior to interception = If B declines penalty it's B's ball.
For NCAA, mostly correct. If B does not score, the personal foul penalty would, indeed, have to be declined for B to keep the ball. However, if B scores, the penalty may 'carry over' to the try or succeeding KO.

In the first situation, team A might also accept the penalty instead of taking a longer advance if time expires in the half during the down. Just nitpicking :)
