My crew is not wearing them. I would susopect not many of us will as we can get swapped in and out of assignmenst at short notice. So much easier to just not have them. Just my pennies worth.

The college shirts come with the letter as part of the shirt. I'm unaware of a HS shirt that comes like that -- it would require a sew-on letter. I have no interest in adding something to my shirt.

If we switch to the 2" shirt or someone starts making the 1" with the letter on it, then maybe.

As long as all crew members are wearing them, they seem to be OK by me!

Question: Heard that the 2 inch stripes may be OK'd for high school football officiating in 2013. Anything out there to confirm or deny that?   z^

Haven't heard anything, but its got to be inevitable, even if only as a crew option.

Those little plackets, plackards, whatever you want to call them, don't make you better officials, so I'm not pushing them on my crew unless they all want to wear them.  Makes no difference to me.

As far as HS moving to the 2" stripes...what I heard was that between, NF, TASO, NCAA and the NFL there is an agreement that we will all stay where we are. HS 1", NCAA - 2", NFL Copyrighted 2".

There's no such thing as a copyright on a shirt. They can trademark a design mark -- even a big one -- but the 2" stripe has been out on a shirt for decades in the NFL and been sold to the public for a long time for officials to wear working pro rules games (semi-pro mostly). Even if there was a way to trademark the design of the entire shirt, the NCAA couldn't do it.

Joe, go try to buy an NFL shirt and let me know what kind of luck you have. They have copyrighted, patented, watermarked...whatever, the style of the shirt with the tapered stripes, numbering and other particulars. There may be some other leagues using a 2" stripe but it is not the NFL shirt.

That may be what has been done with TASO but not every state will adhere to that I'm sure.

I would request that when posting statements like this, people indicate the basis of their knowledge. I don't know who on here is tied in and who is just spouting opinions. Not asking that you burn any bridges with someone who told you something in relative confidence, but at least identify in general terms how or why you know this.

I heard from a high up TASO Football board member we were not going to be using the 2" shirt.

Good enough?

Back to the original subject. I understand why members whose chapters don't operate under a crew system would be dissuaded to wear them due to working various positions. My crew has voted not to don plackets. Anyone care to share some valid reasons to do so?

I do not see one. My crew has opted to not wear them.

Coaches and fans know the 5- man crew positions by now. Heck even most site announcers know who is where.........

If you are on a crew and always work a certain position do you have any reasons not to wear them? If the whole crew wants to and/or doesn't care

I don't personally see the need for them but it's not a big deal one way or another. The only concern I'd have is that since I'm only working as a sub on varsity crews right now would be the potential to have to have a bunch of different lettered shirts.

Our crew hasn't decided yet either way, that has been the only negative that we have come up with if someone had to miss a game.  I think if we go with them the person who will be absent will have to leave their shirt behind for the fill in or we do a game without, it really doesn't matter, we all have plenty of unlettered shirts.

dumb question, how far down the shirt should the top of the placard (placket) be?

The placket should be positioned two inches from the collar on a small or medium shirt; three inches on large and extra large; and four inches on double extra large and larger.

This was from the 2005 Mechanics Manual (the only one I had at work).  I don't think it's changed though.

I have been told that they show up well in a rifle scope. They work best in the 7 man crew, during pregame warmups the B and S stand together and the F and U. Fans love it.
