Field Goad Kick Hits Crossbar, bounces back towards field
« on: June 18, 2012, 03:00:55 PM »
Field goad kick (happened last year), beautiful end over end from about 20 yards comes down directly ON  TOP of crossbar, then like a basketball bounces up and then down on the crossbar again and finally rebounds back towards the field.

Attempt was called no good.  I thought I read in a case book or on line that if the ball penetrates the vertical plane between the inside of the uprights and the front edge of the crossbar which is also in line with the inside edge of the endline, the kick would be good.

I was told by another member of the crew that it had to go past the crossbar and he used the example of kicks that hit the uprights and are no good.  I figured that was not the time to try to explain it as I was a fill in on a well established crew and for folks who have not been in that position, it can make for a long, long game.

I probably won't see this again for another 100 years...but just in case.

8-4-1 c.   "kicked ball shall PASS between the uprights......and ABOVE the crossbar....".

Just in case it doesn't take all of 100 years to happen again, the advice you got was correct.

NF: 8-4-1c;  "A field goal is scored as follows....(c) The kicked ball shall pass between the vertical or the inside of the uprights extended and above the crossbar of the opponents goal."

Thanks to all for the answers.  Someone sent me a link that shows such a play (the ball actually bounces on the crossbar a few times!): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2229648462443513878#

...and as the ball did not as someone noted "pass through" the plane, it is no good.  Now if the ball goes through, bounces on the support and then bounces back  towards the field of play, it would be good since it first passed through the plane.

Now that I am VERY comfortable with this, I'll likely never see it again while wearing stripes!

For a TD or a safety, the ball only needs to break the plane of the goal line.  For a kick, the ball must completely pass through the plane of the goal.
