TASO Policy on sub-varsity
« on: August 14, 2012, 11:57:13 AM »
Is anyone affected by the new TASO policy of not working your kids sub-varsity teams?
I have Jr high and high school aged kids that I have been able to help the chapter by working and working my son's game.  Now I won't be able to help the chapter for any sub-varsity.  Just wondering if anyone else is affected.

This should be a no-brainer, but please don't work your kids' games. You shouldn't work games at that school at all, ideally. If you have kids at a school who aren't playing, then perhaps a small exception can be carved out (e.g. an assignor is out there covering for a give-back). This honestly shouldn't be anything to complain about.

I don't like working games at schools I attended. I'll do the subvarsity if needed, but not varsity. Its just not worth the headache.

Here is a question that I always wondered about.  What if your kid doesn't play a sport or plays a different sport than what you officiate?  If this is a question of integrity, and you are worried about how you would do your job you should not be in the profession at all.

Why would any official want to put oneself in that position? That's just asking for trouble.

In more urban area it's a fine deal, out here in B F E we have lots of games with 2 officials, what is our best of the worst alternative, 1 official or none, or 3 officials and one being a dad?????
  2 officials and 22 players ain't a good deal

For what it's worth fellas, in FL if I'm not mistaken you can't work at any level (V, JV, MS, etc):
*your kid's current school (& I believe for +3 yrs after they graduated too)
*a school any direct family member (wife, brother/sister, mom/dad) works at.
*the school you attended, until 10yrs after you graduated

I don't disagree with any of the comments, but we live in an urban area with lots of games and need lots of officials.  Secretaries are constantly complaining about D1's not helping out with sub varsity.  This is the only way I would be available to work and have never had a problem in the past.
Sub varsity is good way to meet and help newer officials and I normally enjoy working the games and meeting the new guys.
It sure is easier to sit in the stands and complain about the officials that to be on the field listening to it.

I think this is a tremendous big deal made out of nothing. I was talking to a guy in one of the college chapters a while back about how they handle grads from schools in the conference since I happened to go to one of the conference schools. I asked if I joined the conf, would I be scheduled around that particular school or what was the policy regarding that. This official said there was absolutely no issue with working those schools because all the officials are expected to have professional objectivity. I imagine the same can be said for the NFL officials too. You cant bar Texans from working Dal or Hou games, you just have to expect them to be professional in their work. Why cant we hold our own to the same level?

It is all about perception.

I remember hearing Tim Millis once say, "If I can't trust a guy to work his alma mater, then I can't trust him to work any game."  I like that attitude but the sad reality is that we DO have to be concerned about perceptions.

Apart from our own fraternity, you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who will say they trust someone to work a game their kid is playing in.   Either they will think you will be too lenient on he and his teammates or you will be too severe on tem in an effort to prove you are not being too lenient.  It's a no-win.

And if you are the kind of guy who is going "to sit in the stands and complain about the officials", I am not sure we gain much by having you on the field.

I would never call a game at my kids' school.  Not because I couldn't be objective, but because that it would be the one game that I have a major oops in.  Then my kids would have to deal with the fall out at school,  "Your dad cost us the game."

I guess all this goes back to the conflict of interest policy, but, who is responsible to making sure that this policy if followed? I know of one game, next week, that will not follow the policy!

Ea individual official and ea chapter are responsible.  Remember, COI's can be waived by both teams.
