Really, we're only going to see this "running off" scenario with Team B.  If Team A has 12 players, they've probably already broken the huddle with 12 or positioned the 12th man in the formation somehow and we'll be shutting it down anyway.

I was told at a clinic in August COC (formerly Alliance) is using the numbers as their guideline.  Running off between numbers and sideline at snap...live ball...otherwise...dead ball at snap

Ya gotta do what your coord directs, but considering the tops of the numbers (properly marked) are 9 yards from the sideline, and the numbers are typically two yards tall, that leaves 7 yards between the numbers and the sideline.  That's at least two steps for even the longest of strides. His "next step" may not take him out of bounds, and that is the official guideline. Not sure why you'd need to be more lenient, but when in Rome...

"Next step" isn't a guideline for live/dead. It's for foul/no foul.
