I have absolutely no dog in the NFL hunt, and wish no ill toward anyone, but when you face the wrong way (away from the PB/camera) giving an announcement on a Sunday night national TV game, I think you may get 'dinged.'

“Some officials are wearing ear pieces that connect them to an eye in the sky -- another official watching from the press box -- to assist them in making calls.”

I think the crew in the SD vs. Dallas game was wearing them last weekend.

Really? The on-field guys? Or the alternate?

I know there was talk even before the replacements came in about experimenting with a crew communication system.  I did not realize they would alos be talking to someone off the field though.  Way I had heard it described it would be within the crew so you could communicate with one another from distances apart.

Rumor has it someone from Manor Rd in Austin was looking at the devices a few weeks ago and considering purchase of same.

The system manufacturer provided these devices to our on-field officials for last year's state championship games.  There were three other "listen-only" observers plugged in to evaluate the effectiveness of the system.

From what I'm told, the system worked very well, although some of the on-field guys found the specific equipment to be somewhat uncomfortable.  The NFL and SEC had observers there to see the system in action, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it in their games in the near future.

When the NFL officials went on strike in 2001, I recall that each game had an officiating supervisor who could communicate with the on-field officials via a wireless hookup to an earpiece on the umpire.
