I'm the worst official ever according to one Freshman coach. He also informed the R of that game (who is an FBS official) that I should never officiate another game. This was my first game of the season.  yEs:

Give the coach a break....he probably had a bad day with his unruly social studies class, and just needed to vent.

Yesterday in. JV game visiting team scores with 1:15 left in the game to get within 6 points. We discuss onside kick and set up for it. Sure enough they do onside and the home team dives on the ball at the K49.  Visiting coach is screaming that they cannot touch the ball until it goes 10 yards. I told him they could and he just stared at me as I walked away.

I guess I should be able to treat him the same way then when I have a bad day. :)

In a youth game yesterday, we had a coach saying he was going to report us to the UIL.

Friday night.

Quarterback: (Takes shotgun snap, turns to hand off on the draw, sees that his RB fell down)

Slot Receiver: (Takes off on a post route, then turns to block his DB for the run)

DB: (Puts his hands up in the air as though to say, "He's pushing me! Do something!")

Quarterback: (Has nowhere to hand the ball and starts scrambling to try and make something of the play)

Quarterback: (Fails and is sacked)

Defensive coach: "That's OPI! That's OPI! He can't push my guy like that!"

LJ: "There wasn't a pass, coach!"

Coach: "But the quarterback was back to pass! He can't push like that!"

LJ: "Doesn't matter - there has to be a forward pass, across the neutral zone, for interference rules to be in effect."

Coach: "...there has to be a pass for pass interference? Since when???"

My favorite is still the coach exploding about a horse collar foul.  "Coach, the guy who grabbed the collar didn't tackle him.  He lost his grip."

"So what?"

"Coach, I can't call a foul for a horse-collar tackle without a tackle."

Had this same scenario in my NCAA game last sat....

Working S last night.  A's ball, about B's 30, 4/16.  A84 beats B11 off the line in running his pass pattern, and B11 grabs him right across the jersey with both hands and stops him from getting out into his pattern.  Flag goes flying (and a beautiful throw, if I do say so myself - hit the line perfectly from about 20 yards downfield).  Incomplete pass, I report the foul to the R, we mark off 10 and replay.  A's coach asks me on my way back, "that's not a first down?"

"Coach, defensive holding isn't an automatic first down in high school ball."

Fast forward to 1:30 left in the game, same team's on offense, on their own 12 or so, 3/12, down a point with no time outs.  A84 beats B11 off the line again, and B11 does the same grab.  Flag goes flying again (though not anywhere near as majestic as the first one).  Incomplete pass, I report to the R again, we mark off 10 and replay.  A's coach asks me on my way back upfield, "are you sure we don't get a first down for holding?"

Youth game today (I know I know but Disneyland doesn't pay for itself).

I'm working H and the visiting runner breaks for a good run. A defender grabs the back of his shoulder pads and yanks him down. Textbook horse collar. I drop my flag, mark progress and go report.

Coaches are screaming "He got his pads!!!"

Yes exactly, thank you for agreeing with me coaches.

My second straight week posting on JV coaches ( just lucky I guess). First half home team wins coin toss and chose to receive. Visitors chose to kick from clock. After the toss I went over to visitors sideline and coaches are talking that they will have the clock in the 4th quarter. I was going to talk to them about something else so ignored thier talk.
Moving on to after halftime. I saw the home coach first and said I am sure the visitors will take the ball, which goal do you want to defend, he said he will kick from clock. I went to the visitors and asked if they want the ball. They did and then I told them the home team will kick from the clock. The head coach asked why did they get to choose? I told them that his team had the pick on receiving and they had the goal choice. He said that was wrong, it was picked in the coin toss to start the game. I said that was for the first half and we do it again for the second half. They still thought I was wrong and probably think that today. Yes they lost 36 to 3.

One of my first games as a white hat a few weeks ago, I was asked part way through a game if a new center could come on the field and do a "few practice snaps with the team", coach was very indignant when I told him no, he can do that on the sideline in his own time.  Must have been coaching Baseball in the off-season?

Had a freshman game this past week where I flagged a home player while on offense for a chop block. A defender was already engaged up high when a back came in and cut him low. Easy call.

The head coach near my sideline indignantly complains "So we're calling that in freshman games now?"

When I tell him the number, he whines "He doesn't even know how to do that!"

And the beat goes on.  yEs:

One I witnessed, youth coaches, in response to my flag when their attempted on-side kick went out of bounds after traveling 11 yards, "But it went 10 yards."

The other one was relayed by a fellow official, freshman game, "They can't use up the entire 25 seconds when they're trying to run out the clock."  He (the official) admitted not knowing how to react as it was the first time he had ever heard that complaint in 20+ years of officiating. :!#

Technically, that's correct: if they use up the ENTIRE 25 seconds without snapping the ball, then the result would be a delay of game foul.

But who knows what the coach meant?

I paraphrased a little bit- the coach was actively arguing that the other team was obligated to snap the ball as soon as they came to the line, that they could not purposefully consume 24.999 seconds of each play clock.

I asked a middle school coach before a game last week if he had any trick plays. "No we keep it straight up."

Second down on offense they run a double reverse pass.  ???

Worked U for a varsity game last week. Coach had "nothing unusual."

First play from scrimmage, the guy used an offset line with the centre on one hash, and the other four down linemen stacked on the other hash.

Oh, and the same team also ran a gaurderooski.
