I'm actually fine with the Boise St. blue turf. I don't like it, but it's better than this black field and the red field at eastern washington. The alternating grey/purple at central arkansas is kinda weird.

Is your question based on the thought that traditionally fields are supposed to be the color of green grass. Other than tradition, I do not see how it allows anything to get out of hand. The new turfs (regardless of color) are actually much improved over previous turfs. How about the golden era of football? When the game was played on baseball diamonds and worn fields of mud and dirt. The turfs are an improvement and the new colors may spark interest from new players and fans.

The reason I say getting out hand is because I honestly see a safety issue with a black field. With so many heat problems plaguing high school football, black turf would only enhance that. I wouldn't say I'm a traditionalist and I absolutely LOVE officiating on field turf but when it starts to affect the game, I just don't like it.

Turf fields have added over 20 degrees to fields on sunny day since the first astro turf was installed. Games throughout the sunbelt register triple digit temperatures at kick-off on many game days. If this was truly an issue, kickoffs should be required to take place in the evening (the Oregon team may already be doing this), or we should refrain from playing the game during hot weather months.

I've said for years that we (especially here in the South) should swap HS football and baseball seasons.  No heat-related problems for football players, no cold-related arm problems for pitchers.

Okay, I will cut you some slack, because you are from Texas and you deal with some of the hottest game day temps in the nation. I will also cut Roscoe some slack, because I think he is from Georgia (another hot state).

Oregon is not a hot state (possibly has the highest percentage of cloudy days in nation), if they want a black field, what do we care?

What percentage of High School games in Texas and Georgia kick-off in the afternoon (before 5 PM)? Here in Illinois that percentage is probably below 5%.

We have quite a few kick off between 4 and 5 around here. In Oregon you're right, a black field is probably not as big of a deal heat wise though it can get warm there at times.

Don't forget that those fields are typically used for more than just HS varsity games.  Here, middle school and JV games all begin during daylight hours.

In addition, our youth league use HS fields for their Saturday morning games.

I have called on the candy cane field... on a bright day the grey runs into the white sideline and mixes quite well.... makes it hard for those oob calls.

Jerseys should contrast the field turf.  Imagine having a close call of a runner being down.  Was that his knee on the ground?  Or was it just a black blurr because it was camouflaged with the field?

Does this mean we eliminate green jerseys and pants? Maroon jerseys that resemble the color of the football also provide challenges for us.
