BBW or Targeting
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:08:10 AM »
The new restrictions for BBW have made it harder for 5 man crews.   Friday night we had the following:

A's ball on their own 40.   Off tackle running play and the back breaks free.   I am on the opposite hash and start to cleanup behind the run when I see A88 on the opposite hash BBW back toward his goal.    I throw a flag and the play ends at the B25.   I am waving everybody back when I realize there is a question I need to ask.   I go to the LJ, U, & HL to ensure we have what I think we have.    All the time the offensive coaches are yelling, "He's the tight end!"

So I ask them if A88 was one of their restricted players.   They all said no and that A88 had been lined up at tight end all game.   We returned the ball to the B25 and I waved off the flag.

At halftime my U suggested I should have kept the flag and called a targeting since it was definitely behind the action (my opinion: it was an unnecessary block but legal and not cheap).

Opinions?  As we were in the end zone at halftime waiting for the teams to exit the field, the A head coach told me as he went by that it was a great decision to wave it off and that most wouldn't have.

Several things..if he was blockingback towards his own GL, it does not matter if he was restricted or not.  ALL Team A players are prohibited from doing this beyond the NZ and NONE are prohibited behind the NZ.

Targeting involves a hit to dead or neck area.  You did not have that unless the blockee had his head up his idiot.

You could call unneccesary roughness for hitting someone out of the play but that is not "targeting".

Not trying to argue but only to clarify.   I had the same thought about ALL players being restricted as to blocking back towards their goal but I was unable to find that in the book or the attachment we got several weeks ago.

I added this then took it out but here it is again.   From TASO website: an unrestricted player can BBW at any time in any direction any where on the field.  (On targeting: I thought this was for defenseless players.   I did not realize it carried a head/neck requirement.)

From TASO:

 BLOCKING BELOW THE WAIST

From talking to many of our members, including emails from several of you, there seems to be some confusion about the Blocking Below The Waist rule.
Let me try and clear up any confusion among us.

Blocking below the waist isbasically illegal. However any lineman that is 7 yards or less from thecenter lineman (not necessarily the snapper) AND any back that is stationary
and completely inside the tackle box can block below the waist in anydirection anywhere on the field at any time; the disintegration of thetackle box does not affect their status. Linemen that are more than 7 yardsfrom the center lineman AND backs partially or completely outside the tacklebox can block below the waist only along a north/south line or toward the
sideline to which they were adjacent when the ball was snapped. Any player's adjacent sideline is the one on the same side of the formation that he is on when the ball is snapped. In other words, when the ball is snapped, if a player is on the left side of the formation, his adjacent sideline is the one on the left side; conversely, if the player is on the
right side of the formation at the snap, his adjacent sideline is the sideline on the right. If a player is in motion and is on the left side at
the snap (for instance behind the left guard), then his adjacent sideline is the left sideline and if he is on the right side (behind the right guard) of
the formation at the snap, then his adjacent sideline is the one on the right. If the man in motion is directly behind the snapper when the ball is
snapped, then his adjacent sideline is the one toward which he is moving at the snap. Every offensive player on the field has a north/south line and it
moves with him wherever he goes; however the only players to which it applies are the ones that were limited at the snap. The easiest way to
remember this is that if a player is limited, then he can only block toward his adjacent sideline or parallel to the sideline. It is really no more
complicated than that.

As for Team B, they can block Team A players below the waist until the ball has been advanced 5 yards or more. However, even if the ball has not been
advanced 5 yards, this does not allow Team B to block eligible receivers below the waist beyond the neutral zone, nor does it allow Team B to block
below the waist Team A players in position to receive a backward pass.

Do you have either the new rule book or the addendum to the old book?  If so, look at 9-1-6-a-1.  As for the TASO document, I have not seen that before but will look for it and get a clarification made if required.

Sorry to keep beating this dead horse guys, but TASO strikes again.  That blurb from the TASO.ORG website was from LAST year, yet it is displayed prominently on the front page.  I sent an email to them over two months ago asking that they take it down and it went unanswered.

Be that as it may, always rely on your rule book (with UIL exceptions) not was is on the TASO website.
