Stripes with mics

Noticed today in 2 different SEC games, including the UT/UF game on now, that some of the on field officials (U,H,L) have on microphones. Anyone know the reason for this?

Thanks for the link Rulesman. I later saw the white hat with an ear piece and then guessed that was what was going on. I would be interested to hear the officials' comments after using them. Can't think of anything bad.

Except 7-guys all talking at once.  There must be some radio discipline/protocol or it would be a mess.
I wonder, voice activated or PTT?

What about this Rule (1-4-13)...?...does not apply to SEC Officials....?

Referee Microphone
ARTICLE 13. A microphone is mandatory for the referee to be used for all game
announcements. It is strongly recommended that it be a lapel-type microphone.
The microphone must be controlled by the referee. It may not be open at other
times. Microphones on other officials are prohibited

The story said the SEC asked for a waiver so they could experiment with this.

A possible drawback is that you may not know who is standing near you and you could say something that you would normally say in a crew huddle with some privacy but which you would not have in this situation.  Also, unless it is a pretty sophisticated system, someone can find a way to intercept the communication and maybe not everything said between the crewmembers is something they would like heard.  If there was strict radio discipline, these issues might be contained.

The mic Rostrom is referring to is a mic that has PA access, like the R uses to announce fouls and penalties. It doesn't mean closed communications between the crew by way of technology is not to be used.

They used this during the AHSAA Super Six last year. The only issue I have with it is that I'm deaf in my right ear. This has never been an issue with me on the field ever. Although if I were to wear an earpiece then it would be a problem because it would have to go in the only ear I have available. This honestly worries me.

The company that is providing the transmitters is Vokkero.  They have a couple of different options with it.  There is a voice activated that sounded like works well because of technology that they used and they have a push to talk.  Some officials got to use it at Karl Richins' Stars and Stripes Academy and they said they preferred the PTT.  Games went faster with this as the official that had a flag down didn't have to come in to the R to report.
