Suspended Game
« on: September 17, 2012, 04:11:20 PM »
Game is suspended due to weather and resumed the next day. When you arrive, the home coach tells you:

1.  "I watched yesterday's film last night and that holding call you made to negate our TD was crap."

2.  "Just so you know, last night Coach John and I mutually agreed it was okay to watch yesterday's film."  Also, Coach John had a previous USC foul the preceeding day.

Thoughts?

1.  If he was an IDIOT about it, I'd probably pop him with 15.  if not, just ignore it and keep moving.

2.  Well, it's not okay but I'm sure it's always done in such situations.

We had a suspended game last week that never actually got started. We had an hour long storm delay before we ever took the field. We allowed a 20 to 30 minute warm-up period. We blew the RFP whistle and just prior to the kicker kicking the ball, we had a lightning / thunder occurrence. We left the field for another hour and the administration suspended the game until the following day.

We then had to make a decision to have a new coin toss or go with what we had the previous night. We chose to stick with the previous coin toss. Fortunately, we had great weather and wind was not a factor the following day. Has anyone else had this occur? Did you re-flip or not?

You only flip once. There are no "do-overs."

This was an interesting OP with a lot of room for individual interpretation IMO - given 1-1-6, 1-6-1 and 2, 1-7-9, 3-1-4 and 5.  So, in the interest of consistency, I asked our State Association (Michigan) for its "official" interpretation - which appears below:

"1-6-1 and 2 prohibit the use of a number of things (video included) during the game or between periods.  When a game is suspended on one date and to be resumed on a later date, it becomes just that, a suspended game.  While one could make the argument that when the game is suspended it is still during the game or between periods, it is obviously not the spirit or intent of 1-6-1 and 2 where we don't want video or pictures being used in the press box, sideline or halftime locker room.

From a practical standpoint, officials have absolutely no way of enforcing any violation of 1-6-1 and 2 if a game is suspended and picked up on the next day or two.  If the coaches want to watch film during this time period after they get home after the game has been suspended, so be it.  We cannot expect officials to penalize a situation that is impossible to officiate."

Agree.  Suspended games are resumed from the point of suspension, whatever that may be, and played as if the suspension never happened.

In KS - teams may not watch film in the time a game is suspended.  We ask the principals to lock the film/cameras in the vault so there is no hint of inpropriety.  We have this discussion with both principals and coaches present.
