OT Dead Ball foul
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:40:15 AM »
Went to overtime over the weekend...visitor failed to score...and after the player was down we had a dead ball personal foul on the home team.   We administered the 15 yards back from the 10  to the 25 and set the line to gain stakes.   An assistant after the game tried to tell me it wasn't right in OT  that you should be able to get a first down after such a penalty was marked off....it should still have been first and goal.
As I read it....we never set the stakes for a new series for team A  after team A committed a dead ball foul before the ready for play.   It should not have been first and goal....but first and 10 as we set it....

If your state used the NFHS overtime guidelines, the coach was right.  See rule 5-3-1 in the overtime supplement:

The line to gain is always the goal line regardless of whether or not a penalty enforcement places the ball more than 10 yards from the goal line to start a new series.

You learned something today, and it was a couple of coaches that helped you do it!

Under NFHS code, as AB said, it's always "and goal" in overtime.  A can get a new first down via penalty if B commits one of the fouls that includes an auto first down (DPI, roughing the passer/kicker/holder/snapper), but the line to gain is always the goal line.

Ohio's different: we start OT at the B20, 1/10. So the OP's procedure would be correct here, except that we'd start A from the B35, 1/10, after enforcement.

And yes, we're special. :D

The line to gain is always the goal line in OT regardless if penalty or penalties place the ball more than 10 yards from the GL to start a new series.  See "Resolving Tied Games", pgs 89/90 of the 2012 Rule Book.

As much as we get slammed for NOT knowing the rules, we have to take our props when we can find them! aWaRd

Just because a coach disagrees, it doesn't ALWAYS mean he's wrong.

Had this not been overtime....and same foul occurred after   A failed to reach the line to gain....and B committed the DBPF....again I read it that you mark it off and then set the chains...  or is that only on a DB Unsportsmanlike foul....?

Had any dead ball personal foul, non-player foul, or USC foul occurred any other time during the game you would mark off the 15, set the chains, and it would be 1st and 10.  Non-player and USC fouls are treated as dead ball fouls.  See Rule 10-4-5a,b,c; and Case Book play 10.4.5B Comment)

Since A failed to reach the LTG on 4th down, it will be B's ball 1st-and-10 after the walkoff for their DB foul.

We start at the B15, and the OP procedure would have been correct here also.  That's why I made sure to preface my answer with, "If your state used the NFHS overtime guidelines..."

I don't know if starting at the 15 makes us special, but it makes us unique!

My time in Georgia coincided with the ten-minute minigame tiebreaker, complete with one point awarded to the team advancing the farthest on a non-scoring drive to resolve the game if necessary.  I am glad things have evolved.
