Jack Folliard, PAC 12 and a former National Championship Game referee, was bowled over by a player while signaling touchback on a kickoff Saturday. He had to leave the game.
Let's hope he is fine and back in the saddle. No better representative of our avocation.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- The referee for a game between Utah and Arizona State had to be helped from the field after being injured during the second-half kickoff.
 
Referee Jack Folliard was injured after apparently being run into by a player in the end zone on a kickoff that Utah's Coleman Petersen sent through the back of the end zone.
 
Folliard was on his back for several minutes as medical personnel worked on him and a cart was wheeled onto the field. Folliard was helped to a seated position and groggily walked with help past the cart into the tunnel.
 
Side judge Aaron Santi took over as referee after Folliard left.
 
Afterwards, Folliard said he had a bad headache and didn't remember everything that happened, but wasn't going to a hospital.

Also heard from the replay official at a game this week, that a first game Div 1 official was severely on a pylon play Saturday before last.  MRI showed not only a broken C7 vertebrae but a previously un-diagnosed brain tumor.  Believe it was SD or SD State game.

Thanks El Mac.  I don't recommend trying this!  The last I recall was watching the ball sail out of the EZ ....  the next is in the trainer's office with docs 15-20 later.  Feeling a lot better today - head is now ok but shoulder and neck are a bit sore.

The TV didn't show the hit but did show me down for the count....then I sat up and, with help, walked slowly out of the stadium.  Again, even after watching this my memory is a blank!  Goes to show you the dangers of concussions to players who act normally and want to get back in!

I guess I kept asking "where's my hat?"  ---  Those of you who are hair challenged like me will understand.

I consider myself very lucky that they didn't hit my knees or ankles!

I've never quite understood the mechanic most R's seem to use where they run to shield the receiver from being hit after a TB. Makes no sense. Players are wearing protection for such hits. Perhaps this unfortunate incident will force supervisors into changing that mechanic. Glad this wasn't more serious.

TSB:  I'm certainly going to reevaluate my mechanic - going to stay back perhaps more behind the receiver always looking up field and trying to keep all players within my vision.  This was purely accidental so I suppose it could happen even with an adjusted mechanic but the odds would be decreased.

thanks to all for your concerns and well wishes - going to work this weekend - sore but not that bad.  Here's a pic which was sent to me by one of my so called "friends"  - it was labeled:  "Once again he is napping on the job!"  I still don't remember anything - from before the hit to the trainer's office.

To ask a personal question - you obviously don't need to answer if you don't want to.

After being knocked unconscious and having a memory gap, why would you not go to a hospital and get yourself checked out? It might have been just a concussion, but what if it was something more?

thanks for your concern.  I was checked out by a couple of great team doctors and was told it wasn't necessary unless my head symptoms worsened or didn't clear up in a couple of days.  So all is well - even my crew says my judgment is much better than before the hit!

Jack, glad you're OK also. I would be lying if I said this video wasn't rolling through my head when signaling a touch back in a JV game last week as I watched all of the kicking team members come barreling down the field.
