Blocked punt advanced

4/10 on K-20, scrimmage kick formation. Ball is hiked, two defenders get through the line and block the punt immediately after it is kicked. The ball hits the ground at the K-15 but continues bouncing/dribbling forward past the LOS. At the K-25 yard line a K player scoops up the ball in stride and advances to midfield where he is tackled.

What is the result? Who is next to put the ball in play and what yard line?

The block, the bounce, the touch by R and so forth are all irrelevant. The ONLY consideration concerning whether K may advance a scrimmage kick is where they recover it.

Since K recovered the kick beyond the ENZ, the ball is dead immediately. 6-2-4

Agreed, immediate whistle when K possesses the ball.

Disagree on a flag for delay of game.  No intent by K to delay the game or showboat.  That kid thinks he has something legitimate going on.  He's trying to figure out which cheerleader to ask out that night because he thinks he's going to be a hero.

I had a coach ask yesterday why he didn't get the ball when his team's punt was block at the LOS and his team fell on the ball 10 yards further downfield.   The kicking game is probably the most misunderstood of any facet of the game.

I don't think that there is any "probably" about it.  Applies to coaches, players, fans, commen-tators, and most officials.

It depends most of all on whether we have a whistle. With no whistle, no DOG foul.

With a whistle, I'll let him get about 5-10 yards before we have a DOG. Intent to delay is not necessary: negligently continuing to play after the whistle merits the flag.

Are we looking for reasons to throw our flag here?  Unless the kid is running all the way into the EZ and then throws the ball into the stands, and then does the Icky Shuffle, and then strips completely naked, I think I'm just blowing the whistle to stop play.  He'll eventually get it.  It's amazing how locked in kids can be when they have the ball.  No reason to be picky about this.

I saw this play on TV, our local HS highlight show. I'm not certain if they killed it because the game sound is muted so the announcer can talk over, but based on the way the camera followed the guy who recovered and the reaction of other players I don't think they did. My guess it that since the ball is immediately grounded and bouncing down field maybe it's not obvious that it's still a punt. Maybe it looked like a fumble? I don't know. Thought it would be interesting to discuss. Be careful on those kicks!

Agree.  'Round here, we'd be too busy getting the new ball from R's sideline & setting the chains to even notice.

I agree with the premise not to be to quick with a DOG in this situation. Each incident would need to be considered separately.

I, too, agree that we should not be too quick to flag DOG on this play.

But I will also not be too slow to do so: some in my association will NEVER flag it, which seems to be the tone of some of the posts in this thread.

In re: the DOG flag.

I agree, if there is no whistle, there can be no DOG.  If the official wasn't smart or quick enough to kill the play, why should the player be held to a higher standard?

But if there was a whistle, sure running a few yards is nothing.  Running 25 yards, and doing so with enough vigor that the defense felt the need to tackle you?  That's worth a flag.
