Kick Off question
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:26:18 AM »
Had a kick off where the ball went to the 1 yard line, as K touched the ball the U blew his whistle.  Never had a chance to recover the ball or even for R to Recover the ball.  I was the HL the R and U were not sure what to do.  I called it a Inadvertent Whistle and we re-kicked it.  needless to say I was not happy and nether were the coaches for both teams.

With Rule 6-4 the table under the note says A kick ends when a player gains possession or when it is ruled dead by rule.

So would you re-kick, rule it dead on the 1 and give it to R, or what what other option is there?

I would have like the ball to remain live and let either one of the team recover the ball.

There is only one legal choice here.  It's an IW, rekick, and the U buys the post game beverages.

And the R didn't know what to do?!?!?!  You need a smarter R.

Wouldn't happen here, the U is with the kicker and has no idea what's going on down at the 1.  That's not to say another official couldn't make the same mistake, but it wouldn't be the U.

Agreed w/ Atl.  New 5-man mechanics dictate U is with R on the 50yd line.
Certainly 4-man or local mechanics would dictate otherwise.

Yes they put the R and U back on the goal and the BJ with the kicker , the HL with the kicking team line and the LJ on the R receiving line

WOW! That K player must have been Bob Hayes or "Lightning" Bolt.  R couldn't get to a kick off on their 1 yard line?  Must have been the slowest team on record....

IW....re-kick

Unless I'm having a bad day (which is certainly possible), yes, U is on the home side with Receiving team on the 50.

Ah, you meant RT, the receiving team, not R, the referee! :)

Exactly!  I thought you mistyped that the Umpire and the Referee are on the 50 yd line.  Yikes!

But even with the "new mechanics", the U wouldn't be anywhere near the 1 yard line.  Panama Ref has some very different mechanics.

This is certainly an IW. I'm surprised your R didn't know what to do.

Just to point out, the quality of players - and refs in Panama would be quite inconsistent. They have only had an NCAA rulebook for what 2 years now (PanamaRef had a lot of questions about translating it).
As for not getting the FK, the R team might not have expected such a good kicker and then thought it was going into the EZ and not 'bothered'. They have not grown up with football, it is new to most of them.
