Feel for you.
A friend works for a major sody pop company.
He can't work all season due to unpredictable, mandatory OT from time to time. - some of which may be on Fridays. - and his boss is a real PITA about being flexible for him on Fridays.
Heck, he works first shift, too.

As an assignor, I have no problem with work-related issues. Those things happen. It's the other excuses (like "I 'forgot' it is my wife's birthday", etc.) that make me unhappy.

I'm lucky enough to work as a teacher in a school where the principal is a former AD - if I have to leave a few minutes before our contractually obligated after-school time ends to make a subvarsity game, he knows I'll make it up (and usually with interest) on another day.  That being said, I admire the sacrifices a lot of you guys have had to make to officiate - I know not every boss (or wife, for that matter!) is as forgiving as mine.

I know the feeling. I missed almost the entire season last year due to work. This year I missed two games but was able to drive back and forth (6.5 hours each way) to work the others.

Luckily my job is very flexible on hours with managers that love football.

As a firefighter, I usually don't have these problems. But for some reason no one signed up to work. We have minimum staffing so when some one is off, some one has to be there to replace them. It works out to about every 4 months that I get mandatory overtime. First time it ever happened on a Friday. My crew texted me and said I didn't miss anything. 69-0 running clock in the second half.

Still sucks though. I am already going to miss the last two weeks of the season because of a training class.

Working with the assigner in the morning. I will be apologizing profusely. Usually work related stuff is much of a problem but if you give a lame excuse it effects your chance of getting playoffs.

I would not want to the an assignor - at least not here.
There are a lot of officials here that are also active players, and I hear sometimes from the assignor that X phoned him the night before to drop a game because he has to play the same day. The game schedule is set for weeks, the assignments also. It doesn't take much to keep on top of it all.
I created a headache for my assignor this year too. I caught pneumonia in August (middle of our season) and missed the last 2 months of games - he had to scramble and even cancel one game (I wasn't the only one to drop out of that one).
I'm back on the field for the field time this coming weekend - to be evaluated for the next level - and I'm going to be rusty.... Oh well, better than not getting on the field!

Hey NorCal Mike,

I'm a firefighter too and we never have the problem because we never get OT.  The only time we ever get any is when we get federal grant money.  Other than that, we close up to three companies a shift during the busy vacation period and even had five shut down one night until the powers that be made a command decision and called guys in.

Our minimum manning only calls for a certain number of guys on a truck (3) not per shift.
