I'm guessing that Charlie Stephenson will never put him in one either!

Good grief. We have enough trouble when we do our job correctly.

However, I am concerned that someone asked the official to leave. This has happened before in another sport. While I guess legally, they can remove an official from their property, if they are doing it against the judgment of the Referee, it seems the appropriate measure is to suspend the game and the entire crew leave.

Thoughts? In this case, the crew may have been glad the guy was run off, but I'm obviously referring to other situations.

Why is it again the rule about bands playing during a live ball is universally ignored here? In other words, why does the UIL even bother?

Ignored in Ohio, too.

The state bothers because the coaches complain. Puts AD's in a hard place, between band directors and head coaches.

Glad I'm not in that place.

I agree it would have been appropriate for the crew to pack up and leave.

So in other words, all the band is good for is to give the non-athletic something to do and to stir up trouble?  :sTiR:

did you see this quote?

Quote
"I know a lot of parents will say football is more important than the band," she said, "but us band parents, we don't believe that."

those band parents can raise as much noise as the sport parents...  maybe even more, they have drums..

What is the UIL rule?  Here is the NCAA rule

Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise
that prohibits a team from hearing its signals.

Define Noise.  Playing a song, especially when its your own team should not be any issue.  We had a game last year that would wait til the QB started his signal calling and then they would let out this very loud blast of a horn.  I jumped as did the offense.  I then went over to the head coach to explain they couldn't do this.  No flag or anything.  He still disagreed with me.  Even after showing him the rule later in the week they decided to try this tactic in a playoff game.  A different chapter worked the game and they blasted that horn the same as they did in my game.  The Referee on that crew flagged them and penalized according to rule.  When it was reported back to me that they got flagged, all I could say is, "I tried to tell you not to do that."  Needless to say, they don't do that anymore.

Jason hints at something important: there's a huge difference in saying, "coach, the rules prohibit them from doing ____; if it continues, I will be forced to throw a flag and penalize your team..." and (to the coach/administrator) "the band has to stop doing that, so go tell them to stop." Make the head coach or admin figure out what's wrong and deal with it in their own way. Make sure another official is with you in that discussion.

I know I have been criticized for mentioning this in the past in select circles, but here goes anyway.
If in a stadium where the bands are set up near or usually closer than they should be to the endzones, I go meet the Band director and ask them to lower the music " NOT STOP " when the opponent is inside the 25 yard line. I explain to them the reason. I figure good communication with them pregame is better than having to deal with it with an audience. I have not had a single problem nor complaint. If the bands are in the stands I usually am not concerned about band noise.

I have got to go see one of your games live (watching you on TV does not give the full effect) cause I would sure like to see an end zone band that CAN play "lowered".  My experience is bands know one level, on or off.    ;D
