Clock management "horror" story
« on: November 03, 2012, 03:21:59 PM »
From yesterday's Freshman game.

Team A (visiting team) has the ball deep in their territory (15 yard line or so), 2nd down and 9, and about 35 seconds remaining on the clock in the first half.  Team B has 1 timeout left.  Team A hands off the ball and gains nothing...and to my surprise, the Team A coach calls time out.  Now we have third down and 9 with about 30 seconds on the clock.  Team A runs the ball on third down and the LJ throws a flag for holding.  We march back 10 yards from the spot of the foul and replay third down.  I wind the clock and we have about 20 seconds remaining in the half, so obviously, Team A doesn't have to snap the ball.  (Stating the "obvious"...Team B is not trying to stop the clock with their remaining TO.  This is a Freshman game with the ball on about the 10 yard line.  Tom Brady or Peyton Manning are nowhere in sight.)  The ball is snapped with about 8 seconds left and Team A passes the ball!!!!!  Incomplete pass with 1 second remaining (obviously a Team B clock operator).  So now Team A lines up to punt (punter is standing in his own EZ) and instead of snapping to the up-back to take a knee to end the half, Team A snaps to the punter and he punts the ball.

Yikes!

Basically the coach said to himself "I'm going to see if they can score here"

If a clock operator really wants to create problems for the field officials, one of the surest ways to do so, is when the visiting team is trying to score before the half, or worse near the end of the 4th qtr. (with or without Tom Brady or Peyton Manning) even though only a a desparation heave is possible, allowing remaining second(s) to tick off after a forward pass hits the ground.
