Tyler Chapter - Mt Pleasat vs Wylie
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:21:32 PM »
This is from a thread from The Old Coach -

Happened last night at RCISD Stadium in game between Mt Pleasant and Wylie.

Team A scores a touchdown. Team B blocks the extra point kicking attempt and the ball, comes down and lands in a scrum of both teams in the end zone. Presumably Team A catches the ball before it hits the ground in the end zone. Not knowing if the ball touches Team B other than the time the kick was blocked, the referee approaches the scrum and signals a successful "two point conversion" because team A is in possession of the ball.  Another referee intervenes and signals a safety against Team B. After a few minutes of referee discussion and the final ruling was......(You make the call)

According to the follow up post, Team A was awarded a 1 pt Safety. Can anyone from the Tyler Chapter get the on field story about what happened?

If the kick landed in the ez and never left the ez after that, I see no way for a 1 pt safety.  Team B would have to be responsible for the ball being in their ez in their possession when declared dead for that to happen.

If a kick put the ball into the end zone, can't be 2 points, no way for 1point safety, b didn't put ball in the end zone, best way out is no points , neither team benefits.
I know that's not in one of R R' s rulings, but you need to be able to think on your own sometime.

I'm not sure I understand why there could not be a 2 point touchdown for Team A even if a kick was the impetus.  If the ball was first touched by Team B more than 3 yards beyond the NZ before hitting the ground in the EZ and then subsequently becomes dead in Team A possession behind the goal line, I would have a TD for Team A.  Where am I going wrong here?

Obviously, if Team A first touched then the try fails, and if the ball is dead in Team B possession there's no way for a safety unless they ran or fumbled the ball out of the end zone.  It doesn't appear either happened in this scenario, so I can't imagine how a 1 pt safety is possible.

If nobody KNOWS the kick touched a Team B player beyond the NZ, then the kick did NOT touch one of them.  Try is over.  No score for anyone.  Move to the KO.

That should certainly be the call.

From a news report:

"After returning the free kick to midfield, the Pirates used 11 plays to reach the end zone – Dontae Slay caught a two-yard pass from Kameron Kelley for the score. Kelly then successfully threw to Winkler  for the two-point conversion and Wylie cushioned its lead 20-0.

Mount Pleasant then started moving the ball.

Starting from his own 40, James threw to Kaderius Cannon for gains of 14 and 33 and the Tigers reached the Wylie 12. James then ran for gains for gains of five and four, before crossing the goal line (on fourth and one) from three yards out. Juan Buitron’s extra point attempt was blocked by Keith Lilly, but the ball was recovered by Benjiman Boyd recovered the ball in the end zone to score a point for the Tigers who now trailed 20-7."

Im from the Tyler Chapter. This is what happen. The Extra Point  was blocked and team b caught the ball in the end zone. Team B ran the ball out of the End Zone. And for some reason ran back into the End Zone and down in the End Zone.

That's the hang up to all the situations that get posted here, in meetings, in the news paper, something always gets left out, omitted or just plainly slanted to favor a point off view.
Blocked, recovered, intercepted, crossed the Los, x2 were never in the original post.   As grand dad would have said"we were about 1/2 cocked"

Hey Cowman - if you post it twice does it mean you are now fully cocked?

The post on Facebook was made on a closed chapter members only site as a play situation to test rules knowledge.  The play in question happened like this:  A point after try was blocked and caught in the end zone by Team B (without being touched by any other player or touching in the end zone).  The Team B player came out of the end zone and then retreated back into the end zone where he was downed with the ball in his possession.  After the player was down he tried to pitch the ball forward out of the end zone to a team B player (which would have been an illegal forward pass had he not already been down) which made it appear that the ball was fumbled.  It was not fumbled and the player had already been ruled down in the end zone. That is a safety and by rule on a try it is a 1 point safety.  And that is how it was ruled.

This makes for a good training situation.  Suppose the play would have been as above.  Ruling?

Foul is cancelled and try is over. No points.

I disagree. The distance penalty is declined by rule (rule 8-3-4-a), but the penalty still leaves the ball in team B's end zone with team B being responsible for the ball being there. Team A scores one point.

If you rule that the foul is cancelled, team B gets an advantage - they should always attempt an illegal forward pass in this situation, as the worst case would be an incomplete illegal forward pass and the best case a completed illegal forward pass.

If the player had not been downed and pitched the ball forward in the end zone it would have been an illegal forward pass and a safety.    Since it was on a try it would still be a 1 point safety for the kicking team.  In either situation it is a 1 point safety.  This was discussed at the time of the play as well due to the ball being pitched forward.  The determination was the player was down in the end zone which made the illegal forward pass of no consequence.
