I heard a rumor yesterday that Bill Lemonnier is retiring from ESPN and Shaw will be taking his spot as an on-air rules analyst.

Breaking news:
Tech just announced that, yes, they will play Houston on Friday, 9/18, and they will play the Thanksgiving Day game at Jerry World vs TCU. And the official schedule has been updated since this morning to reflect that!

Etref must have had some good ‘inside information.’  :thumbup

Don't they have a fairly popular NFL game there on that date?? JUst curious

Wow. I can’t express how flattered I am with your comments. Sure, I’d love that job. But, sadly, I ain’t in that mix.
Most likely McDaid or Defee. I know another guy that probably covets that job, but, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he is neither in that mix. If you’ve known me long enough, you know who I am talking about. That would be a disaster. (No one currently directly active in NCAA football.)

I don't know Defee, but I would be surprised if McDaid would want it (I think he would be great at it...maybe I'll be surprised).  Plus, Shaw and Rogers were both "SEC guys" and I don't think they want a pattern to emerge.  Shaw wasn't supposed to get that job originally because they didn't want an SEC guy to follow another SEC guy, but some plans changed around the time Rogers retired.

National Federation Discussion / Re: Free Kick after a fair catch

The NFHS 'stuff' on free kicks on fair catch.......

* Clock, flags, etc treated the same as regular kickoffs other than  ^good ^no

* Officials line up as other free kicks (kickoffs) R & U are deepest (5 man) and for FG attempt under the pipes to make the call  ^good ^no

* Don't forget the set the stakes to establish the free kick NZ.  ^talk

ODDs of occurance are less than a one-legged man winning a butt-kicking contest, as the stars have to align.....

- Only viable late in the half/game as team is giving up the ball. ???

- Kicker needs to be able to reach the pipes :-\

-3 points has to mean something  ???

PERSONAL NOTE : i'M 80 and have been a football official for 56 of them. I've seen Halley's Comet (once every 76 years) once but NEVER seen a free kick after a fair catch in any game I've worked  :(.

Ralph,
Thank you. That info answers my questions. Unfortunately, the NCAA appears to have decided on a hybrid Fair Catch Kick. Reportedly, the kick, itself, is made per kickoff rules, but, then, follows scrimmage kick rules. But, no mention of timing. So, I was wondering about the NFHS rule, which you answered. Thank you.

I think they actually intended "if" they are aligned within the tackle box and did not mean that numbering exceptions "must be" aligned in the tackle box.

89     76 14  12  63  52  47(s)
                                                                  88

                                            49  48

                                    19 (k)

Certainly not arguing, because we just don’t know. But, by Shaw’s interpretations to date, the formation you presented does not qualify as a SKF, because it is not “obvious” that a scrimmage kick will be attempted. I am hoping that the committee is wanting to force Team A to use a tight formation to be able to use numbering exceptions. We’ll just have to wait until we can get somebody to press Shaw for answers to these questions.
