Big 10 Coin
« on: October 25, 2012, 09:15:14 AM »
I would like to purchase an original or replica Big 10 referee flipping coin. The head side of the coin is an image of Nile Kinnick. I'm not looking for Kinnick commerative coins. Those are readily available. Anybody have a lead on such an item? Thanks. - Jeff

Your quest spurred me to read on the subject.

Quote
To this day, at the beginning of every football game in the Big Ten Conference, the coin toss features a coin with Kinnick on the heads side of the coin, while the helmets of the opposing teams are on the tails side, each coin is minted at the beginning of the season, and handed to the Head referee by a Big Ten official prior to the beginning of the game, all coins are kept under lock and key at the Big Ten Headquarters.

I'd say an original will be hard to come by and ultra-expensive.  Probably need to pursue one that is given to a team captain

I'm aware of several conferences have their own coin, but not down to the game-by-game level. It sounds like the Big 10 just about considers every game a bowl game.

It is my understanding that each Referee on a crew has one and each coach in the conference is given one before the season as well. I think it would be hard to find someone to give one up.

Not the players, apparently...
