A coworker has been giving me light hearted grief (mostly via work email) over a call he feels I missed during a high school game last season   ^no.  In light hearted retaliation, I sent the following little attempt at humor.  I am sure someone else has already done this (and probably better), but here it is:

We live in a world that has games. And those games have to be officiated by men with whistles. Who's gonna do it? You? You, witty fan? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for for your team and you curse the officials. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that the rules, while not in your library, are important to read. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, does not decide games...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that field. You need me on that field. We use words like rules, mechanics, game situation...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent officiating something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very game I officiate, then questions the manner in which I officiate it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a whistle and read the rule book. Either way, I don't give a DARN what you think you're entitled to!

If your submission didn't work, or satisfy your co-worker, you might advise him, that not unlike the US Marines, most Football Officiating Organizations are also looking for, "A few good men", and provide him with whatever recruiting information and details your organization, or the covering organization where he lives, if different than yours.

It's a win-win situation for you;  If he does follow up on it, you may have helped recruit a new official, if he doesn't it's doubtful he'll question you again, but if he does, you can always ask, "Hey, did you get that material I sent you.....".

Being an Army guy, I thought you would be original and not take something from a Marine.  I thought you did more at 5 AM than most folks?

You have a long season ahead of you...

Every Soldier  :patrioticon: ( vs “Army guy”) I know, is an excellent plagiarizer.  Why reinvent the wheel?  yEs: A wee bit of massaging and presto, there is a perfect product.  ^good  Not to mention, not sure quoting an actor whose only military service was in the Air National guard qualifies as quoting a Marine. ;D

And what did he do in the ANG?   Fireman (who trained at Lackland).

but the words really came from a left wing commie Hollywood type writer who got the idea from his Navy JAG sister.

Nonetheless, it took an Army guy to really make them worth listening to and repeating.  Thanks Dave!!

I think Clint Eastwood said it best". The marines are looking for a few good men, and you ain't it"
