Worst Injury
« on: September 07, 2013, 11:14:02 PM »
Friday night in the second quarter, I was throw my bean bag to mark a fumble when on of the kids ran into my extended left arm. I watched my left elbow hyperextend. Man that hurts. I made it through the rest of the game. Being left handed made it difficult to handle relays and throw flags. Still hurting 24 hours later.

Got me wondering what is the worst injury you have suffered while officiating?

3 years ago on a horribly wet night. Running back comes to my sideline and is going to be tackled about a yard in bounds. We've all seen the play a thousand times and you know where he's going to land.

However tonight the kid hits the water on the sideline and hydroplanes. Never even slows down and puts his helmet into my left shin. Splits the skin on my leg and gives a giant bump. Next day after doing a couple of 3rd grade games. I find my left foot is the most remarkable shade of purple. Turns out I broke 2 bones in my foot when my foot wouldn't come out of the soggy sideline.  The shin hurt worse than the foot so I never noticed.

Why would you "throw" your beanbag when all you have to do is drop it on the yard line where the fumble occurred? In fumble situations you should be looking to mark a yard line, not a specific spot.

If you're not near the yard line, it must be thrown to get there.

Exactly as TxSkyBolt said. The fumble occurred about 4 yards ahead of my position. The ball rolled towards me. I was just tossing the bag to get it to the correct yard line. The player who ran into was trying to get to the ball.

The first contest that I ever officiated was a wrestling meet.  I left the gym that day with a torn ACL, torn MCL, and a shredded medial meniscus.  Last year in football, I tore up my ankle pretty badly after rolling it transitioning from a backpedal to a forward run after an interception.

I was out 6 months on the first and 4 weeks on the second.

Nothing for football.
Dislocated shoulder via wrestling officiating.

I ended up with a concussion as U once.
As I was tracking something and turning to the left I started to squat down to see something better and a D player ends up clipping my chin with the crown of his helmet. Probably would have been a targeting foul this year!

I've been fortunate- I'm good for about one quality ding per year but nothing that has put me out. There's the dent in my finger where an asst coach and I accidentally bumped into each other after a time-out and my finger whistle made a nice gouge below the knuckle.  There's the left hand bruise where I came down on a helmet during a clock stop signal at the sideline.  There's the pulled abdominal when a B player missed the tackle and sent me sprawling forward (a first for me).

There's the busted lip and nose where a tackler rolled over and his foot hit me in the face-that one staggered me.  The same HC that had just been ripping me a new one actually bent down and checked on me and said "wow, you took a shot there"

Back when my plantar fasciitis was at its worst, I did have to get a couple of cortisone shots in my heel to keep going.  Those are a lot of fun but they helped.

I've been lucky but as I get older (50 now) I know the "kill shot" is probably out there waiting somewhere.

My elbow is still sore. Lots of ice and motrin this week. Every once in a while I hit the something in there wrong and it hurts pretty bad.

I couple of years ago, I got leg whipped across both thighs. Had a couple of bruise to my thighs. That hurt the rest of the game.

Week One (9/6/2013). Late third quarter. Visitors are down by a bunch. And then suddenly, I found myself with nowhere to go. This screen shot is the point of impact. Things went downhill from there. Big ol Taladega pile up. I popped right up, shook off all the black pebbles, player hands me my hat, and I think, "wow, that really hurt". Good thing I had  sNiCkErS in my back pocket to cushion the fall to the turf. I finished out the game, (mercy rule clock helped), but in hindsight I should have come out. The last three or four minutes of the game I was trying to still officiate, but stay way out of the way. Got knee drained the next Monday and had Grade 1 MCL sprain and chipped something off on the outside. Loaded me up with NSAID's and some pain pills and sent my on my way. Probably needs scoped after the season. Worked last Friday night with no major issues except that jog back to position after a score, another mercy rule game too. Knee feels fine but leg right below knee still pretty sore but getting better each day.

Its coming up on 4 years, JV game (3 man game) I'm the FJ and on the second half kickoff, the return runner is making his way up the sideline towards me. His angling to the sideline and I see a defender closing in on him. I back away OOB on SL see the play as they (runner and defender) pass in front of me. I"m in good position, to see the hit, I turn, look, see it, the spot. I'm killing the clock when I get clipped. Now I have a artificial knee. It works better then the other.
