Staying on the field!!
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:00:54 PM »
I'm a military member who like many others has to move state to state or country to country every two or three years. My problem with this is that most times I have to restart and work back on to the field like a rookie each time. Do others have advice or suggestions for this. For example I carry a full Varsity schedule and when I move I'd prefer to stay at my same level or work higher. No one likes to take steps backwards every couple years. Thanks all!

Have the chapter secretary send an intro letter to the new chapter letting them know about you

Your assignor should be able to write a recommendation.  However, don't expect to grab the top games right away.  You'll still have to show what you can do on the field to earn their trust and to show that you can adopt their mechanics.

An unfortunate drawback with gool ole boy mentality.
In that midset, while you may have been a state final official in state X, we still want to see you work and seniority, etc.
While the mindset should be "we want the best guys out there"
Perhaps if their job depended on having the best guys out there, like college supervisors jobs do, maybe that would change.

Anyway, when you move from state X to state Y, contact state X and have them draft a letter saying your ranking, experience, etc.
Also get a letter from your local assn: joe has been w/ us for x yrs, is a rank X, worked big games, etc.
Generally, having this will:
"promote" your ranking in the new state. - at least it will in FL
let the new assn know you arent some guy off the streets. (conversely, though working 1 scrimmage will clue them in too)
What part of FL are you now stationed? (PM if you prefer for that recon)

I know many pinellas guys.
Get referee DB, or GB, or referee ES, or even KS (SunBelt Conf), or TR (ACC), or ES (replacement NFL official) to draft something for you.

Steve I never officiated in Pinellas. I joined the military and left back in early 2000s buy I'm very familiar with those initials, especially the Blantons.

Letters from former assigners, fellow officials and even coaches will never hurt and can help. Our local chapter uses internal ratings for varsity assignments . We service 18 schools and where many travel to schools outside of our service area for games, we supply officials for anywhere from 6-11 games. Assuming the minimum of 6 games would need 30 officials, we rate the official transfering in as 31st meaning that on the shortest weekend he may not get a game. He will obtain his internal ratings from us for future years. Seem fair with few gripes.

I don't get this, at all. I've moved three times now, into different associations, and in each case, was treated appropriately, allowed to integrate into crews based on the depth of previous experience, etc. etc.
