Trick Play

2d and 10 at the A-40.  A is in its standard spread formation.  WR on left (A's sideline) runs a deep post pattern and pass to him is incomplete at about the B-30.  As he jogs back upfield in the center of the field the rest of his team also gets back to the NZ to line up.  They are a no-huddle team. He eventually veers  to the outside and gets out  wide again, so wide that he is closer to the sideline than he is the numbers.  No subs come into the field of play.  No defender moves out to cover him.  QB has the ball snapped and throws the ball to that WR.  Legal or illegal?

As long as he was between the numbers when the RFP was blown then I don't see how it can be illegal. Defense should be ready for him since that's where he was the last play

Not illegal at all, regardless of where he was, unless as mentioned he indicated a sub.

If team B cannot cover all 11 team A players, that's their problem. No foul.

In this situation there would not be a RFP with a 40/25 clock.

If I well understand, this is legal if after the previous play and before the snap he has been inside the 9-yard marks before he goes near the sideline. That's it?

In the absence of any timeout, a player who participated in the previous down does not have to be inside the nine-yard marks at/after the RFP.

7-1-3-b
1.Each Team A substitute must have been between the nine-yard marks. Team A players who participated in the previous down must have been between the nine-yard marks after the previous down and before the next snap (A.R. 3-3-4-I).
2.All Team A players must have been between the nine-yard marks after a charged team timeout, an injury timeout, a media timeout or the end of a period.

In my mind this play is similar to the "midget" play, where one player crouches in the huddle and hides out behind the offensive line.
