I just wonder how long it will take the NFL to realize this dog isn't going to hunt. Where do they draw the line with racial slurs to [insert ethnic group name here]? If you think these don't happen... think again.

I don't work in the NFL, where this game is played by grown men.  At the High School, and Collegiate levels, however careless slurs, especially racial or ethnic, can strike a nerve in the recipient of the slur, that there is an OBLIGATION to retaliate.  If that should happen, my job gets a LOT harder, and I don't want that to happen.

I've learned, with an amount of accumulated scar tissue, to put an absolute and visible stop to any such exchanges the instance they start, sometimes with a flag, sometimes not, depending on the circumstance ( which no two are ever identical) so that both parties accept and understand that such an exchange has ended and is not acceptable.

There are some things that are so offensive that 50 guys in a bar would agree it should be flagged.  The n-word is one of them.  I agree that this could get out of control if we have to start analyzing everything in terms of "political correctness" but the n-word transcends that IMHO.  Use it on opponent, even if you and he are both Black and you are getting flagged.    Using it on a teammate is a bit more perplexing.

TV once had the 7 words you couldn't say, now do we take those 7 words and add the slang of all the racist terms and throw in some more as to nationality and whatever else that those same 50 guys in a bar find offensive?  And just throw in that the only reason the fifty found it offensive was the results being recorded.  I'm all for making mouth pieces that keep them from talking at all.  The constant jawing, chirping, and taunting is just as bad.
The guy who gets clocked and refers to the clockee as a offspring of a female dog, we got to get that stopped.  This is gonna get out of hand.

Still remember those words. One of George Carlin's best bits. But a couple of them are used on TV all the time now. IT and HACK are often heard on TV.

I don't know what's worse: The fact that this many players are using this word on the field, or the fact that it wasn't getting flagged and that we need a rule to mandate that it be flagged. Now as for a list like George Carlin's (Which is one of the best comedy classics), I have a few of my own that I'd be flagging instantly with no warning, including the n-word, and the slur that starts with an "F" that refers to someone's sexual orientation.

Maybe we should just get the dictionary re-written and change the definition of all those offensive words.  Start teaching the newborns that those words mean something pleasant.  Then 50 years from now nobody would be offended if they were called one of those words because those words would be pleasant instead of offensive as they are today.  I guess I'm just a person who doesn't get offended by any kind of language that is spoken to me.

Wow apparently the BBS system didn't like me writing a couple of those words you can't say on TV.

Long ago, in the dark ages, when I was in HS, I had a reading assignment to read "The Virginian", s story about the old west, the details of which I have long forgotten, except with one exception.  At a point in the story, an adversary said something offensive to the main character, who responded, "When you call me that, you better be smiling", whcich sent a subtle message we seem to have forgotten today.

More important that what is said, is often what was MEANT by what was said.  An insult is only an insult, if it was INTENDED (by whomever actually said it) to be insulting.  Most times if you aren't sure if an insult was intended, you can usually let the first one go, because if insulting you was the true objective, there will usually be a follow up, which will provide the opportunity to respond.

Especially on a football field, initial comments are very often emotional outbursts to specific circumstances fueled by frustration and/or dissappointment, and aren't intended to insult.  A far less confrontational response, but one that can be even more effective, might be "the look" (the one your mother gave you when acted really stupid in public, and caused you to dred going home).

If insulting was the objective, you can pretty much count on confirmation coming.

I guess I'm just a person who doesn't get offended by any kind of language that is spoken to me.

It's easy to be blase about discriminatory language when you've not part of of any group that's been the target of it.  The word we're talking about has been used systematically for hundreds of years by white people to literally reduce the status of black people to something less than completely human.

Quote
“It warn't the grounding—that didn't keep us back but a little. We blowed out a cylinder-head.”
“Good gracious!  Anybody hurt?”
“No'm. Killed a Nice.”
“Well, it's lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt."

Huckleberry Finn's Aunt Sally, reacting to news of a steamboat accident in chapter 32.  That's the attitude that underlies that word when a white person says it to a black person.  It's kind of hard to just shake that sort of thing off, you know?

Now, when it's black people using it among themselves, it's in a completely different context.  What doesn't change is that it's still a not very professional word to be using, and not all black people agree that it's a word that should be reclaimed; a person might use it among their friends, but may well think twice if they were at work, trying to sell something to a customer, even if they were both black and in a store surrounded by other black people.  That's how the NFL can justify taking it off the football field.  Nobody would complain if a board member got fired because during board meetings, he referred to his colleagues as "f**kers" and usually told people he disagreed with them by saying "dude, you're full of s**t".

Thats what I think too.. but in the NFL almost every other player is mic'd up now. So there will be ways to find out who said it.

There's a really simple solution to ease Mr. Goodell's righteous indignation and sensibilities, remove the television microphones from the areas surrounding the plaing field, and any conversations inappropriate for public presentation will cease being presented.  One of the single most things this planet does NOT need, is yet another source of "Political Correctness" applied to situations it has no relevance to.

Then again, maybe the "problem child" professional football players could actually start acting like civil human beings. Just saying....

They can all thank Mr. Sherman of the Seahawks for his melt down after the game!

I think this as much about the interaction between the Redskins player and official and the Jonathan Martin situation as anything.  They both left a black mark on the league so they feel the need to do something publicly to address it.  I wouldn't expect much to be actually different on the field although there could be less use of the N word.

What did he say that was offensive or inappropriate?

Acting like a complete bufoon and a spoiled child throwing a tantrum can be both offensive and inappropriate.  When someone does become the "best" at what they do, there shouldn't be any great need to keep telling people (they should already understand that).

Sherman's rant has nothing to do with the NFL's proposals to penalize the 'n-word'.

Maybe not directly, but it sure didn't help. Some of this stuff has gotten way out of hand. There's an old saying" "Act like you've been there before!"

The game was over when Sherman gave his interview.  That had nothing to do with it.  The DeAngelo Hall-Riley Cooper-Miami Dolphin fiascos are the driving factors in this move.
