September is prostate awareness month
« on: July 10, 2014, 10:56:08 AM »
We see a lot of pink in October.  Which I think is great (other than the pink flags  :o)  Might I suggest also supporting prostate cancer in September.  My Grandfather passed away last year from this disease and I decided to honor him by buying our crew blue whistles, lanyards and sweat bands.  If it's allowed by your associations and you feel moved too, might I suggest doing the same.  Feel free to PM me if you want suggestions where to buy as they are a little harder to find than the pink variety.

In OR we are issued blue flags for one game during September.  We could probably do more, and I wish we did something other than those blue flags because they are hard to see.

I will probably catch heat for this, but I think we have enough causes already!

I am not in favor of the pink, blue or any other color on our uniforms.

Ballistic britches in place,, fire away.

Great idea!  I'll be buying a set for my crew to use for at least one game in September.

No heat from me,  Like I said if you feel moved to.  We all do things for causes in our own way and we can't support all causes.

The CFO says not to wear these items.  They encourage you to contribute in another way, but not to deviate from the traditional uniform.

Wearing a colored whistle ain't gonna save some from dying from cancer. Enough game checks donated to the ACS might. Wonder how many if those pink wearing officials do that?

NCHSAA told us several years ago to not even ask.

Probably the better thing to do is for all of us to get screened for prostate cancer, which when caught early is very treatable. I'm lucky because my employer does cancer screenings for us at least every three years, yearly when you get to be my age. Firefighters' risk of certain cancers is double that of the regular population. Through early detection, several of my coworkers have survived cancer although we have also lost more than our fair share.

IA Linesman, from one IA official to another, be careful as in the past few years the IAHSAA has not allowed officials to wear the pink items in October.  Therefore, I don't see them being ok with your blue gear.  Also as SkyBolt stated wearing items will not help provide a cure.

Ohio has actually had a planned Prostate Awareness Night on the first Friday in September. As stated by others the purpose is to promote awareness not because anybody thinks the blue wrist bands they distribute contributes to a cure. Having had prostate cancer treated 5 years ago and having been cancer free since I would definitely advise early detection.

IAUMP, I asked the state (Roger Barr, to be specific) about pink whistles 2 years ago, and he said as long as the entire crew had them, he would not ask us not to support the cause.  I am interested in what you were told regarding this.

justbill, that is fine.  I remember the state giving us direction a few years ago about the pink gear and that to make sure everybody had them or nobody had them.  After that there was no statement made, which to me is an indication that they didn't want the officials to use the pick stuff.  This is what I based me earlier statement on.  It would be nice if we got some kind of direction from the IAHSAA on items like this.

IAUMP.  Fair enough.  I didn't remember ANY statement from the state so when I had a chance to talk with Roger shortly after a close friend got diagnosed for a second time, I specifically asked him about it.  His exact words were "If everyone on the crew is wearing one, I will not ask you to not support a cause you believe in."  I agree.  I would like to see a formal position stated on this.
