Does anyone have any experience with this website?  One of my assigning organizations is going to it this year, and making it mandatory for payment.  I began the signup process, but it was asking for SSN and Drivers License number, so I wanted to just poke around and make sure it's 100% on the level before I went too far.

Anyone out there have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

We use it and it's fine. If you want to sign up for automatic transfers to your bank account, there is a fee. I just go in there periodically and do a manual transfer with no fee.

We have used it for several years. They ask for your SSN to provide you with a 1099 at the end of the year.

Takes a little getting use to, but I like it.  More and more schools are using it and it has meant money is in your account the next day rather than waiting a week or two for a check.

Not so good for those who don't claim their earnings on their income taxes. Since I do taxes for other people I claim every penny I earn, but I know a fair number who don't claim officiating income unless they get a 1099. If you are paid directly from a school it is unlikely that you will pass the threshold of $600. However with all your pay coming through refpay it become more likely and thus get a 1099 at the end of the year.

And what's so wrong with that?

Whether you agree with it or not, many officials do not claim their income for officiating. Getting a 1099 from refpay means you will have to claim that money since it is reported to the IRS. You can claim "so what it is only right to claim all your income on your taxes". Having a centralized paying system will make it harder for officials not to claim some if not all of their income. (right or wrong, just a fact)

You do taxes for others and condone under reporting income?

I'm sorry, where did I condone other's under reporting income? What other's do on their taxes is none of my business unless I am signing my name on the bottom line. Again, I was just stating what the effect would be having a centralized paying system for those who don't claim all of their income.

Probably the same people who go off on others who don't pay their "fair share".

Taxes?  We don't need no stinkin taxes.

I actually claim everything income and expense and I actually make a pretty good increase on my refund every year.  If you claim all your mileage to and from meetings etc, then all that comes back to you.  I think last year I received $0.11 cents per mile.  All other expenses will count towards deductions to your tax you may owe, but more than likely you will not owe, but instead get money back.

Not sure how it works with refpay when individual schools pay. Although I print my 1099 off the refpay site all the info on the 1099 is our assignors info. We get all our games from a single assignor so most of us hit the $600 threshold. It may be different if different schools pay you.

Dear NSA, if you are bugging my computer, please tell the IRS that I always claim my officiating pay on my taxes even though I am one of those crazy IDIOT conservatives.  :sTiR:

Only one school in our area has gone to RefPay so far.  My understanding has been that if we are not signed up on The Arbiter for RefPay, then we will not get assignments to that school's home games.  At some point I signed up, but have yet to be assigned there so I've not been paid via that method.  I recall that some of the payment methods appear to be skewed to the advantage of the company (surprise!)

Early in my career, I did not file my officiating income.  On the rare occasion, I was assigned to work a game at our region's deaf school.  These are operated by the state so they would always want our SSN when they handed us our game check.  Several weeks later, a 1099 would show up in the mail.

Fast forward to about 2009.  I worked so many games in one particular county that season, the school system sent me a 1099, which was a first for me.  By then, I was filing schedule C's. :patrioticon:
