Pre-first game thoughts
« on: August 27, 2014, 02:33:19 PM »
Well, we're just a couple weeks away from the start of intramural football season at my University and as a new official, I'm already as nervous as I probably would be walking down the tunnel at the Rose Bowl on January 1 in a striped shirt.

How much different will it be than I thought it would be? How much will my perspective have changed? I'm sure most of you asked those questions and probably each had a different answer. But in just a couple short weeks, I'll find out.

Hi StudyingFutureZebra

I have to admit, I am a little surprised you took the step, and very thank to you for doing it.
You have asked a lot of questions (and had a lot of opinions) - and hopefully you will be able to apply your enjoyment of the game.
Have fun, work hard and learn from your mistakes.

Like any new experience you will be nervous but it goes away pretty quick. Let us know how it turned out.

I'm 25 games in as new official but all those in 2014 so the memories are still very fresh!  In fact I covered a 5 Vs 5 youth kitted tournament on Sunday (my first 5 Vs 5) so felt very new again just recently.

As a new official I found the most difficult thing was zoning in to do my job as an official and not watch the game like a spectator. Don't worry about stuff in other people's areas.

Read and re-read your position mechanics, if you are sure where you are supposed to be and know what your responsibilities are you'll feel more confident straight away.

Don't expect to get everything right, you almost certainly won't and don't beat yourself up when you do make a mistake.  Keep your head on the next play and after the game you can work out what you need to work on for the next one.

So now that I've had a few hours to digest everything that happened, here's how it went.

For intramural flag football, it was actually a good game. That said, considering that it was a college intramural flag football game, too many people (spectators and especially coaches, who are also students) took this waaaaaaay too seriously. The rule at my university is that you can't block with your hands. You have to keep your hands behind your back and simply get in the way of a rushing passer. Well one kid knew he was beat and grabbed the defensive player in the back with his hands and nearly ripped his shirt. Obviously, that's a foul. Coach under his breath calls me a f***ing f****t. As much as I thought I'd never do this, that flag was in the air before my mind had even processed to reach for the flag and then throw it. Hope he enjoyed  the long walk back of his dorm and the mandatory suspension that comes with it for getting tossed for addressing an official in that manner.

I made mistakes and I got some things wrong and I freely admit that. I also will say that physically, in in no shape to do anything that's actually competitive and faster paced like high school ball. Above all, I can summarize it in two words: Baby steps.

Everyone starts somewhere.  See snaps, as many as you can muster.
