I've been thinking about hanging it up for a couple of years.  How do you know when it is time?

If you are thinking about retirement in the season has just begun, I would say it is time.

If it is because of age or burnout I believe the best way to go is to reduce your schedule. Start working one game a week vs two or more. I talked to a guy last year who was overworked and he reduced to one game a week and is not feeling like he has new football life. If it is really time, talk to your assigner about a limited season schedule and let the guys know what you are planning. At least give yourself a farewell tour.

If it is because you are not getting the kind of games you want that is another story.

I would agree with Mike 100%. If you have to ask the question, then it's time. It was the hardest thing I had to do, but I was able to leave on my terms and never looked back. I miss being on the field dearly, but am able to stay involved and have absolutely no regrets.

That point cannot be made enough...When we get near "the end" we owe it to those before us and after us to step away but STAY INVOLVED!  Too many guys wait until they are completely worn out and brain dead before they leave.  The last several years on the field they were not doing anyone any favors by hanging around.  They could have been off the field but doing things like observing, teaching, etc that would have had great value.  Instead they wait until they are just so fed up with it all that they get totally away.  And then they are of little value to anyone.
