You want to talk about pressure?
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:49:51 AM »
Last night we held the South Dakota 11A final.

Games were played at a neutral site but I'll still call dark jersey's the "home" team.

Score is 12-7 in favor of the "Visiting" team. We're mid-way through the 4th quarter.  It has been a tight ball game.  TD run back on opening KO.  Other than that, no points scored until the tail end of the 3rd quarter.  Essentially 3 quarters of scoreless football.

"Home" team QB is having himself a night but his team is down.  QB goes down, falls on his arm.  Arm bends in 3-4 places.  If I remember correctly, an arm is only supposed to bend in 1 place.  Uh oh.

Visiting team now has the ball.  A few plays later Home team 2nd string QB goes down playing defense.  No Bueno.

Home team makes a HUGE 4th down stop on their own 1 yard line.

Freshman 3rd String QB has 4 minutes on the clock and 99 yards to go in the state championship.

Now that's pressure.  He did really well.  Got them out to about the 50 but then they turned the ball over.  I was really rooting for the kid.  Anybody else have any good ones?

Eleven classifications in a state the size of South Dakota? And I thought Arkansas had a lot with 7 classes. Nothing like a trophy for everyone.

I'd guess he meant IIA, maybe?

We have 4 classes in NC that subdivide into A and AA for the playoffs for championships.   My son's team is going in at 5-6, although in NC, if you play an 11th Endowment game, you get to drop one non-conference loss, so on paper they are 5-5.  A far cry from my day when we went 9-1 with one loss in the conference and stayed home.  Of course I walked 5 miles uphill in the snow to school too.

At the moment, not by that much according to Weather Underground:

Sioux Falls - 26
Dallas - 40

Either way, still cold!

Man it's like 20 degrees here with 20mph winds.  Our playoffs were done a week ago.  Only thing left is the finals.  Those we play in the DakotaDome™.

 LOL

South Dakota is so small we have to use the numbers to let everyone know the number of players!

11A means 11 players.

We have:
11AAA, 11AA, 11A, 11B, 9AA, 9A and 9B.

We have to have a lot of classifications due to the wild variety in population across the state.  Some schools up here actually forfeited games this year because they didn't have enough players for a 9-man contest.

I know how you feel. Had an 11 man game one year where we didn't count the players on the field for one of the teams. We looked at the sideline and if there were 2 players standing there, we knew 11 were on the field. They played 8 man the next year.

Had a JV game this year where the visiting (private school) team dressed 12.  They were on my side (as L).  I spent the whole game counting B when the other team had the ball by glancing behind me for the one green helmet.

Only 8 man I ever worked in NC was for the school for the deaf.  They played 11 man, 1A classification for a long time but when the state opened up other deaf schools down east, they became regional and started playing only other state's deaf schools such as SC and Tenn.

I assessed a game a few years back where the visiting team dressed only 13. The crew very obviously started counting the 2 on the sideline rather than the 11 on the field. That was until mid-way through the third quarter when suddenly there was only 1 substitute on the sideline. I could see the crew frantically counting and recounting the players on the field, but could never reach more than 11. Calm returned when someone pointed out that the 13th player had gone to the ambulance for treatment.  :D

There are approximately 50 1-A schools. They don't play football, but the classification exists nevertheless.

We were talking about the number of classes in a given state. Nobody said a word about how many played football.

Tremendous!

If it weren't for the fact that the team wanted to have him ready in case of injury, the 12th player could have stayed in his street clothes.  The only time he got on the field was to bring out the water during timeouts.

A, AA ???, AAA ::), AAAA :o .....In Maine we have four (4) classes : A, B, C, and D with 20 teams in each class. What's with this " everyone should be 'A...something' "  :P ::) ???. Before our A,B,C & D (pre 1961) our classes were : LL, L, M, S for : really large, large, medium and small. Someone back in 1961 felt A,B,C, and D were nicer. No one yet has felt that A, AA, AA++, etc would be better.

I like ours, 1A, 2A, 3A, etc. 1 is the smallest, naturally and goes up to 6.

Years ago Arkansas had class b and several class a divisions in football. The class b schools were really small schools but a lot of them don't play football anymore so now the football schools are 2a through 7a. There are still class b schools but they play basketball
