would you let that go or call it?
« on: August 31, 2015, 11:38:04 AM »
End of the game, A winning by 2 points, 1:10 left on the clock, 2nd and 8

A kneels down on 2nd down and runs the clock to 0:35 before snapping the ball again on 3rd down and kneeling

On 3rd down, after the snap, B pressures trying to get the ball back by some miracle, and a small confusion starts at the LOS. Small, R and U get in and take care of the issue

When the small mess starts, A's coach and A substitute A23 runs into the field, in the direction of the mess. A23 runs in without his helmet.

I was SJ on this play and A23 stormed in the field right next to me.

This was 4th down with 15 seconds left on the clock, A winning by 2

I called UNS, stopped the clock and we had A running 4th down. Then B having 2 snaps before the end of the game, without being able to win the game.

I will have video of it at some point and when I do, I can post here.

But by description, would you guys call it or let that go and end the game?

This probably should be left alone, and the game allowed to end.  Nothing good can come from those additional snaps.

B having 2 snaps to win would be a very good thing IMO.

Damn....

happens after the second kneel down on this video

HC and A23 enter the field

I didn't flag it at first... I fest the pressure of Team B and then flagged it...

I had the impression that both HC and A23 had entered the field more aggressively

I know feel like I made a big mistake on this one.
Anybody?

And after my mistake, there is a series of other mistakes by the crew...

wrong down
bad communication
wrong announcements

the crew lost it's calmness when I flagged the UNS late and we got lost on that

A23 is not worth a flag, he never enters the fray and leaves when the wing tells him to. The HC is worse, I think this should be flagged, especially in this kind of situation. There wasn't anything really unusual happening, so no reason for the coaching staff to come in.

The coach was in the middle of the field no less than 3 times...after repeatedly being told by the crew to get back to the sidelines.  Game administration interference...easy to tell the coach "this should cost you 15, but we will just give you 5.  Stay on your sideline or call a timeout if you want to talk to your team"
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Thanks guys... my rational for not flagging now that I've seen all this again is that the game was over. If this was on second down and the next down, the third, with 15 secs on the clock, I would've let that go because I don't think theses were enough for a flag now.

A23 gets off the field when I (SJ) tell him to. And I don't like the way I called him to get off the field... but that's personal evaluation of posture.

I don't feel like the coach should be flagged for the same reason as I don't feel like A23 should. But maybe I'm just too lenient on coaches coming on the field. It is an issue we have here in Brasil.
And then, he stayed on the field because we were unable to communicate well with him. Give him all the information he asked for correctly and move on

If there were 35 seconds left when the UNS happened, I enforce the penalty and wind the clock. If you use a 25-second clock that would leave 10 seconds but they'll use most of that on the next snap. If you use a 40-second clock the game would be over. The R could also rule that since the game would have ended absent the UNS based on clock management, I would be OK with you winding the game clock but not the play clock to get the game over.

Why would you give team A a 40-second play clock after a team A foul when team B is trailing?
